Position Highlights |
The UA's Steward Observatory and Dept of Astronomy invites applications for the position of Research Professional II to join Cosmic Explorer's (CE) Office of Land & Community Partnerships. CE is a next-generation astro/physics facility in the US and is currently searching for promising observatory locations. These efforts will aid in building a novel approach to large-scale facility design demonstrating how it can be conducted in community-led partnership with local and Indigenous communities. This position will be the primary support for the socio-cultural and historical research about specific Indigenous cultures (including protocols for building relationships), histories of the land, general issues of concern to Indigenous communities, and conducting research in consultation with Indigenous communities with current and ancestral ties to locations of interest for the CE project. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Be a research team member for CE Indigenous Partnership Program (IPP), a highly specialized initiative for Steward and the University of Arizona:
a) Assist in designing, planning, and leading the IPP program with a budget of $2M. Contributes to ensuring regulatory compliance with various agencies and regulators as required by the program. b) Apply general professional knowledge to document and conduct research of socio-cultural landscapes for locations across the continental US. The focus will be on Indigenous communities and include other communities local to a given location of interest. c) In order to collaborate with the team, prepare and present research findings to CE teams in written and spoken formats. This team consists of physicists, sociologist, legal experts, public relations officers, and indigenous studies researchers from U Arizona and other research institutions such as MIT, Caltech, and CalState Fullerton, as well as private firms, d) Assist in compiling findings to be used in cultural competency training materials for CE personnel and work with contractors and CE personnel to build and deliver the training. - Travel and consultation:
a) Travel to various locations across the US in order to build community relationships with key stakeholders. These trips will have the support of an additional IPP team member to conduct several (3-11) one week long trips per year. b) Provide support and assistance as needed in participating in consultations with tribal representatives. - Participate in regular IPP team activities including:
a) Weekly meetings for IPP which includes PI and IPP leaders, including the Executive Director of CE from MIT, CE's Director of Community Research and Initiatives from U Arizona, CE's Director of Educational Initiatives from Caltech, and CE's legal expert in Indigenous Law. b) Meetings with external collaborators including various indigenous tribes across the US, faculty within the UA, and various colleges and departments on campus including Indigenous Law, Geography, Environmental Science, and Gender and Women's Studies. c) Monthly meetings with larger site evaluation and identification teams. d) Support the development of recommendations and collaborate on weekly action items to for CE cultural development. - Writing:
a) Assisting in the acquisition of grants, writing to support this work. This may require urgency and efficiency. b) Authors white papers to motivate this work to the larger physics community. c) Transfer knowledge to create educational materials based on research conducted for IPP, the CE community, and the broader community with an interest in CE.

Minimum Qualifications |
- BA or BS in Sociology or related field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Experience performing qualitative research.
- Experience with community organization and community based research.
- Experience with crossing and navigating multiple cultures.
- Must be able to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

- Experience with the culture of physics and astronomy.
- Experience with US and Native Nations' governance and protocols.
- Experience with oral histories.
