Job Summary

Uses skills as a seasoned and experienced administrative operations professional to manage, plan and administer the operations of a small to mid-sized academic or non-academic department or organizational unit with limited scope. May report to a chair, director, or a higher level administrative operations professional or manager. Perform short- and long-term planning for the organization. May supervise staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $75,700 - $123,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Self-Pay Billing Office (SBO) manages collections of all patient balances (self-pay) after (or in lieu of) insurance. The department is focused on maximizing and accelerating payments to UCSF for care provided to our patients. This high-performance, data-driven department manages more than 130,000 patient contacts annually through MyChart messages, patient emails and incoming patient calls. Additionally, SBO generates more than 795,000 patient statements each year. The Self-Pay Billing Office (SBO) is also responsible for managing the Financial Assistance program assisting patients when they need help paying their bills.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 2 - 3 years business analytics experience in a healthcare environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge of data analysis and reporting techniques and business intelligence best practices to present key information for management strategic decision making.
  • Advanced knowledge of patient accounting procedures including insurance and government billing
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Epic Hospital and Professional Billing, Epic reporting tools, along with exceptional MS Excel skills to aggregate present data.
  • Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant internal databases, applications and tools. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop and effective solutions.
  • Detail oriented, with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff.
  • Proven ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge of SBO, PFS and UCSF Health rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of intra-department workflows within PFS
