Job Summary

The Department of Computing and Software Engineering in the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering is seeking a professor at the Assistant/Associate rank possessing a Ph.D. in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering or closely related field specializing in any area of computer science or software engineering. Candidates specializing in cybersecurity are especially encouraged to apply.

Florida Gulf Coast University under the leadership of the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering recently established the DENDTRITIC Institute - A Human-Centered AI and Data Science Institute. This university wide institute provides support to faculty wanting to form collaborations across campus around topics related to AI, data science, and cybersecurity. The DENDTRITIC Institute is primarily managed by the faculty in the Department of Computing and Software Engineering. The institute complements the department's two new programs in Computer Science plus its existing bachelor's degree program in Software Engineering. The bachelor's degree program in Computer Science started in the Fall 2024 while the masters degree program in Computer Science started in the Spring 2025. Both programs have concentrations in data science and cybersecurity while the bachelor's degree program also has a concentration in Software Engineering. The bachelor's degree program in Software Engineering currently has over 400 students and is the largest program in the college. All undergraduate degree programs in the college are accredited or seeking accreditation as soon as eligible.

Successful candidates will teach, be involved in course and/or curriculum development, be active in research and scholarship, take part in college and university committees and initiatives and engage in community service. Help strengthen and expand the course of this thriving department located on FGCU's lush 800- acre campus where sustainability is a primary focus. A 125,000-squrefoot LEED-certified classroom and lab building will open in the current academic year.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Plan and teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment.
  • Hold office hours.
  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Adopt course materials in a timely manner.
  • Adopt the university learning management system.
  • Adopt other campus-wide technology platforms as appropriate to other specified job duties.
  • Complete mandatory/required training in a timely manner.
  • Abide by University Policies and Regulations.
  • Participate in the evaluation process in accordance with the CBA and related documents.
  • Participate in the assessment process as required by your respective department.
  • Timely and professional communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators
  • Engage in essential duties with the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, excellence, and within the accepted practices and norms of your respective field/profession.
  • Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students.
  • Engages in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.
  • Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments.
  • Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.
  • Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.
  • Attends faculty and college meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.
  • Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.
  • Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
  • Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours.
  • Perform regular scholarly research and publication.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

  • An earned Doctorate in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or in a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
  • ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2025. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract until degree is conferred.
  • Candidates seeking an appointment at the Associate Rank should have demonstrable evidence of significant contributions in teaching and scholarship.
  • Experience in teaching, research, and professional service interests in the general field of computing such as Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience in Scholarship and/or industry in the general field of computing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching and research interests in disciplinary areas that complement and/or supplement the expertise within the Department of Computing and Software Engineering.
  • Prior experience in teaching, research, industry, and/or extramural funding.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).
  • Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals.
  • Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.
  • Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
  • Ability to collaborate with related disciplines and to establish relationships internally as well as to successfully develop relationships and interact with external industry partners and the southwest Florida community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work in a highly collaborative faculty environment, conduct themselves professionally, and perform appropriate service functions at the program, school, and university level.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a various range of learners and to use information technology as a pedagogical and professional tool.
  • Ability to work with and mentor student organizations, clubs, and competition teams.
  • Ability to foster an entrepreneurial mindset that spans engineering education and research.
  • Ability in collaborating both within and outside of the university in the development of both an undergraduate and graduate research program and in innovative and effective delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. A commitment to collaborate with other faculty to develop a shared vision of the future.
