Director of Operations & Strategic Partnerships
Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI)
Job Summary As the Director of Operations and Strategic Collaborations, you will report directly to Nevan Krogan, the Director of the Quantitative Biosciences (QBI) Institute. You will work closely with the Leadership Team to drive strategic initiatives, growth efforts, and operations that guide the institute's direction. This role offers the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on QBI and QBI's affiliated programs long-term success by ensuring the seamless execution of high-impact initiatives that advance QBI's mission to tackle complex biological problems and develop innovative treatments across diverse disease areas.
You will serve as a trusted partner to the Director, managing QBI priorities, supporting strategy development, and coordinating cross-functional collaboration. Your focus will be on driving intraorganizational QBI growth efforts and overseeing special projects from conception through execution, while ensuring alignment across teams and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, advisors, and high-profile leaders. Ideal candidates are strategic, independent, proactive, highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of navigating ambiguity.

This role requires a high degree of flexibility and availability. The successful candidate must be prepared to:
- Be available for touch bases and urgent communications with QBI Director as needed, including on weekends.
- Travel as required to support QBI priorities, including a wide range of stakeholder meetings, strategic initiatives, or other business-critical events.
***NOTE: This is a full-time, on-site Contract role for 1-year.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $141,200 - $212,400 (Annual Rate). About the existing QBI Team The QBI team responsibilities range from running the operations of the institute to managing specific science projects and programs. We have people who focus on advocacy, industry relations, international collaborations and the coordination of matching different labs with financial opportunities to work together.
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required.
- Minimum 6 years of related experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager.
- Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies.
- Background in Communications.
- Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industry and / or governmental agencies.
- Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
- Expert ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
- Capacity building experience.
- Strong fundraising experience.
- Expert oral and written communication skills.
- Strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
- Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Women's Leadership Management.
- Multilingual
- Managerial experience and proven success in managing a complex research or academic program(s).
- Academic or research background and recognized expertise in selected area.
