The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research, and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology, and surgical pathology.

Under general direction, the incumbent prepares tissue specimens for examination by a pathologist. Incumbent is required to fix, embed, cut skin tissue, and apply a wide variety of immunohistochemical stains as well as other special stains ordered by the pathologist. Incumbent prepares solutions, maintains laboratory equipment, and keeps detailed records of work processed. The incumbent must perform quality control procedures and evaluate results and must resolve minor technical and equipment problems in the lab. Supports activities required for JCAHO accreditation by assisting in updated lab manuals as needed. Performs the full scope of technical duties in the laboratory as needed. Ensures that equipment is maintained and used properly. Assists in monitoring the lab antibody database to be sure that reagents are current.
The Dermatopathology and Oral Pathology Service is a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory, and this position requires significant attention to detail across all areas of the lab.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine histology tasks, including embedding, microtomy, and staining, with high productivity.
  • Conducts a variety of staining techniques, including immunoperoxidase histochemical (special) staining and in situ hybridization staining.
  • Ensures accuracy in slide labeling, specimen identification, and documentation.
  • Recognizes and resolves routine staining problems.
  • Applies sound judgment and decision-making during routine staining and developmental steps.
  • Changes hazardous solutions in equipment as needed.
  • Measures, evaluates, and sections skin tissue.
  • Uses sound judgment to determine if specimens are acceptable for diagnostic purposes.
  • Verifies that specimens are correctly labeled for accurate and complete identification throughout all procedures.
  • Prepares specimen cassettes and enters gross descriptions into Dermatopathology's laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Stores and disposes of specimens following established precautions and hazardous waste disposal protocols.
  • Disinfects work area to maintain safety and cleanliness.
  • Supports activities required for TJC accreditation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Conducts QA checks on slides for patient identification and stain quality.
  • Performs quality control procedures and resolves minor technical and equipment problems in the lab.
  • Handles basic laboratory tasks, including putting away supplies, maintaining and cleaning equipment, preparing solutions, and disposing of chemical waste.

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

  • BS in Science or meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a high-volume histology laboratory.
  • Knowledge of staining techniques and familiarity with reagents.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
