Position Summary |
The Chief Communication and Marketing Officer (
CCMO) serves as the strategic leader for developing and executing an integrated marketing communications approach that elevates
UNC Asheville's reputation, strengthens its brand, and drives engagement with key audiences. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the
CCMO will collaborate across departments to create cohesive and impactful communication and marketing strategies that align with the University's mission and goals.
This role oversees all facets of communication and marketing, including media and public relations, branding, digital strategy, social media, executive and leadership communications, reputation management, and crisis communications. The
CCMO is also responsible for advancing key institutional priorities through innovative strategies in content development, advertising, and audience engagement across multiple channels.
As the University spokesperson, the
CCMO will proactively manage
UNC Asheville's narrative, fostering trust and transparency with both internal and external stakeholders. This leader will both contribute to high-quality deliverables while empowering and supervising a talented team, ensuring the consistent implementation of integrated strategies that drive measurable outcomes while positioning the University as a leader in higher education. |

Required Education/Experience/Skills |
Master's degree and 6-8 years of progressively responsible experience in communication and marketing. Prior experience in higher education. |
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills |
- Master's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, business administration, journalism or related field and a minimum of five years of supervisory experience in communication and marketing, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated experience in writing and editing for a wide variety of publications, including speeches, executive and leadership messaging, and University-wide print, digital and web-based communications.
- Experience in strengthening institutional reputation and image with primary audiences on a local, national and global level.
- A highly collaborative approach that supports key operational areas through data-driven, results-oriented efforts impacting strategic revenue drivers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
- Proven ability to develop and implement integrated marketing communications strategies that align with institutional priorities.
- Expertise in managing media relations and building effective relationships with press and stakeholders, preferably within a higher education context.
- Strong understanding of modern marketing principles, including branding, positioning, content strategy, performance marketing, and awareness-building campaigns across diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience creating cohesive, impactful campaigns that drive measurable results.
- Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams of professionals, fostering collaboration, creativity, and alignment with institutional goals.
- Skilled in budget management, including departmental operations and resource allocation to maximize impact and efficiency.
- Comprehensive understanding of the role of websites and digital communications in advancing institutional priorities, with experience overseeing content strategy, design, and performance.
- Direct experience managing large-scale projects and associated budgets is highly desirable.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas and strategies effectively to campus leadership, the Board of Trustees, and external audiences.
- Experience with managing crises and crisis communications
- Adept at navigating complex institutional environments and proactively addressing reputational challenges with strategic and thoughtful communication plans.
