The Gonzalez Lab at the University of California, San Francisco is seeking a responsible and reliable Animal Caretaker to join our research team. About the Animal Caretaker Role:

If you love birds and enjoy taking care of small animals, then this could be the perfect part time role for you! Handling and caring for our songbirds is the central role of this position. In this role, you will observe the birds and report any change in behavior or health. You will move their cages on a cart for them to be cleaned along with wiping down the walls and cages. Birds are most comfortable in warm humid environments, and you must be able to work in this environment for long periods of time, with short breaks in between. You must also be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and completing your task on time and reliably.

This role is a Part time 8 to 16 hour per week position that is flexible on which the days and times between 7am to 7pm.

What you'll do:
  • You will care for and handle experimental animals.

  • Receive, identify, and issue selected animal species.

  • Prepare special diets in accordance with protocols and ensure that special diets are provided to correct animals.

  • Assist in the operations of standardizing, conditioning, and breeding programs.

  • Administer commonly used and easily administered treatments or medications as directed by a veterinarian.

  • Observe animals daily and prepare routine reports on health, death, and census of animals. Assist in specialized monitoring and surveillance programs.

  • Sanitize cages, bottles, carts, etc. in cage washing rooms and make minor repairs to cages and other equipment.

  • Observe and reports problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems.

  • May restrain animals during experimental, clinical, or teaching class manipulations.

What you bring:
  • High school education or an equivalent of education and related work experience.

  • One year of related experience in a comparable animal care facility.

  • You will work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.

  • Ability to communicate required information, draft routine correspondence, and basic reports, keep accurate records of work performed.

  • Understands the purpose of job and the general role within the work unit.

  • Ability to follow directions and perform repetitive tasks with limited supervision. May request opportunities to learn new skills.

  • Ability to organize projects assigned within daily workload to ensure goals are met.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$19.33 (minimum) - $24.18 (midpoint) - $31.44 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Hourly

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
