Accounting Manager

Overview:
One of Vaco's clients is looking for an Accounting Manager to join their team and help shape the future of our accounting processes. This role will focus on reconciling and maintaining the general ledger, managing the month-end close process, and providing research support for complex balance sheet items. The company has gone through significant cleanup in the last two and a half years, and need someone who can handle this process-driven role. You will play a key role in bringing formality and structure to the accounting function. If you enjoy a mix of problem-solving, process improvements, and hands-on accounting work, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and manage day-to-day accounting activities, including balance sheet reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, and month-end close.
  • Conduct thorough research to understand and clean up complex balance sheet accounts that have accumulated over the last few years.
  • Manage the cleanup process and ensure proper documentation and attachments for all journal entries, creating formalized procedures where none existed.
  • Handle journal entries directly, particularly for tax-related items and other complex adjustments, when necessary.
  • Work closely with the Controller on ad-hoc projects, providing support as needed for real estate, tax, and other special accounting initiatives.
  • Identify areas for process improvements, implement structure, and help build formal documentation for all accounting procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Controller and senior team members to maintain the integrity of the accounting system and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Help transition from paper-based systems and informal processes to a more structured, systematic approach.
  • No direct reports initially; the role will be more focused on process management and handling more complex responsibilities.
  • Work with a team including the Controller, two Senior Accountants, an AP Manager, a Specialist, and another Senior who handles personal and trust accounts.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with a focus on general accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Strong experience with balance sheet management and cleanup projects.
  • Ability to research and resolve accounting discrepancies and complex balance sheet items.
  • Experience working in a less-structured environment and willing to help create formal processes and improve workflows.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently without needing extensive oversight.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Previous experience with process improvements and documentation is a plus.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
