The Peoria Public Library has an excellent opportunity for a Lead Library Assistant in the Technical Services department to complete complex and highly skilled paraprofessional duties that support the Library's mission and vision. This position requires a wide variety of specialized responsibilities and assignments performed that include EDI ordering and receiving, original and copy cataloging, materials processing, and rectifying record and item issues. The Lead Library Assistant will work with the Senior Librarian and Library Specialist to sustain a consistent and efficient workflow within the T.S. department while ensuring a high standard of quality of service. This position requires flexibility, strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or within a team environment.

Below are examples of the position's base responsibilities:



  • Perform materials orders via the ILS' EDI ordering process, including verifying orders with the Collection Development Librarian, importing records from vendor sources, creating local purchase orders and transmitting orders electronically.
  • Receives and verifies materials orders via packing lists, invoices, and purchase orders.
  • Ordering, processing, and returning vendor leased materials.
  • Assist the Library Specialist with database maintenance, bibliographic and item record updates, and additional cataloging projects.
  • Fulfill high expectations for the continuous learning of original cataloging, cataloging with OCLC/RDA, and MARC tagging.
  • Completing physical processing of materials (i.e. apply correct labeling, barcodes, jacketing, security, etc. to new materials).
  • Efficiently address bibliographic and item record inconsistencies, and physical item issues.
  • Tracking and ordering office and processing supplies for the Technical Services Department.
  • Participating in special projects.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:



  • 5 years of public library experience.
  • 2 years of competency in reading and comprehending catalog records and the Dewey Decimal system.
  • The aptitude to do highly concentrated work in both quiet and active work environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills as well as being exceedingly detail-oriented, focused and results driven.
  • The competencies to help assess new products and services, and their impact on the Technical Services Department, the Library's collections, staff members, and Library patrons.
  • Proficient internal and external customer communication skills and relationship building abilities, most notably with both librarians and public service staff.
  • The ability to maintain a continuous positive rapport with vendors.
  • Experience in a municipal or government setting.
