Ketjen seeking a highly motivated and innovative Ph.D. Engineer or Chemist with technical expertise in materials innovation and catalyst development, from ideation to commercialization. The position is for the Exploratory & New Product Development group, within the Refinery Solutions FCC Research & Technology (R&T) organization. The successful candidate will be involved in multidisciplinary projects, driving the development of new products (catalysts and additives) and process technologies in the field of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and related applications. As a R&T Engineer or Chemist, it is expected that the candidate will actively apply their broad technical background in science and engineering to independently plan and execute research to solve complex problems and bring new products to market. Key Responsibilities Include:
Effectively work within a project team of experts from various disciplines to develop new products, catalysts and additives for FCC and related applications. Apply background in chemistry, materials science and engineering to advance fundamental understanding in developing new materials with tailored properties and functions. Design and execute experiments to elucidate and quantify the effects of a material's properties, surface chemistry and formulation on applied catalyst performance. Drive technology transfer to scale up new catalytic products and processes from laboratory/pilot scale to plant and provide technical support for full scale implementation. Facilitate alternative approaches and solutions to analytical and chemical problems by developing new characterization techniques and/or screening tools to achieve project goals. Develop and embed the use of modeling and statistical tools to streamline and solidify the research and innovation process. Actively contribute to the innovation process through the development and justification of new project proposals. Develop strong internal collaborations within our Refinery Catalyst team comprised of our Testing and Operations, Analytical, and Technology Research Groups within FCC and CFT R&D, as well as our Business and Technical Support teams. Network and collaborate with leading researchers from various academic, industry, and national laboratory research institutions. Project management, including supervision of tracking experimental completion by laboratory technicians and communicating progress to key stakeholders. Actively participate in all safety initiatives and conduct all work with a high degree of attention to safety and core values.
Basic Requirements:
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines from an accredited university. Experience in heterogeneous catalysis and/or materials science, preferably applied to hydrocarbon processing. Solid academic background and research acumen, with demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced research environment. Strong leadership skills. Strong cross-functional collaboration and networking skills. Initiative, creativity, and problem-solving ability. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
Proven record on innovation. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of catalysis principles and mechanisms. Strong background and experience in the subjects of reaction engineering, kinetic modeling or colloidal and surface chemistry preferred. Experience in fields related to hydrocarbon processing for fuels and/or chemicals is a plus. Proficiency in data science, modeling, DoE, and statistical methods application is a plus. Versed in the application of solid materials characterization (crystallography, spectroscopy, chromatography, microscopy, etc.). Programming and/or machine learning expertise to generate and analyze complex data and enhance value extraction and application to new product development.
