The Role

The Advisor, New Business Development (NBD) at Save the Children US (SCUS) within the Department of Humanitarian Response will serve as the primary focal point for assigned prepositioning and new business opportunities. You will help develop and execute the vision, strategy, and operational plan to support country and technical offices in positioning the agency to successfully compete for specific opportunities, responding to those opportunities with a quality process and product, building and maintaining an effective business development system of tools, processes and capacities across the agency. You will provide technical assistance, support, and training to staff for new business development strategies and tasks from positioning through proposal submission, with a primary focus on humanitarian response funding from public (BHA/PRM) and private institutions. In coordination with management, you will represent SCUS at internal and external meetings for information sharing and discussions around response-related initiatives, challenges, and support, and provide strategic and operational inputs and analysis.

What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Department and Humanitarian Leadership (10%)



  • Serve as the operational focal point for an area of expertise, such as one of DHR's key institutional donors, program areas, or other initiatives; responsibilities as the focal point may include:

    • Develop tools and systems for training Implementation Offices and other key stakeholders;
    • Lead in developing best practices, sharing resources, to improve performance and sustainability across the humanitarian team;
    • Primary contributor to information requests or strategy development related to assigned institutional donors, program areas, or other initiatives;
    • Support the development of donor strategies;
    • Identify trends, best practices, and challenges with this donor or focus area;


  • Propose solutions and ways forward to advance engagement with donors or focus areas at the operational and strategic levels.
  • Play a key role in continuous unit improvement efforts, taking the lead on specific improvements as identified/requested.
  • Other key strategic work as determined appropriate with department leadership
  • Build and strengthen relationships with and knowledge of partner organizations and represent SC effectively in teaming negotiations as well as industry networks.


New Business Development (70%)



  • Support positioning and capture strategies in partnership with Save the Children country offices and technical staff: pipeline tracking, bid and competitiveness analysis, teaming strategy and partner selection, and proposal planning. Gather and analyze donor intelligence and market research to position Save the Children as a partner of choice and a strong competitor
  • Lead in proposal team management and capture management for strategic public institutional proposals as needed; oversee technical, operational, and cost contributions; write, review, and edit proposal sections; and lead in proposal production and quality control
  • Coordinate proposal pricing, recruitment, technical, and management leads, guiding and supporting the development of coherent, responsive submissions that reflect best practices in business development
  • Manage the process of developing and submitting high quality and compliant cost applications that are aligned with SC's response strategy and donor priorities. Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure proposal budget documents are ready for donor submission, in line with DHR Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Support DHR to maintain knowledge management systems around resource development (ensuring documents are posted on AMS as applicable, maintaining proposal libraries, documenting lessons learned, etc.).


Knowledge Management and Capacity Building (15%):



  • Contribute subject matter expertise to and support the dissemination of NBD tools, resources, learning materials, and other institutional BD knowledge; drive SCUS standards for best practice in business development
  • Assist in organizing and utilizing department tools, templates, and capacity building resources in support of proposal development
  • Strengthen the capacity of Save the Children International staff to respond to strategic opportunities through delivery of information training and tools, including country and regional trainings and/or one-on-one interaction with staff on proposal teams
  • Support the analysis of Save the Children's proposal performance, ensuring lessons and conclusions are documented, shared, and fed back into future proposal efforts


Special Projects & General Agency Support (5%)



  • Support Agency change processes working with supervisor to determine level of engagement and effort, as necessary.
  • Plan for and allocate time towards professional development goals.



Required qualifications for the role



  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant experience


  • Demonstrated experience working across the full cycle of grant/award management from proposal and budget development through to reporting and close-out
  • Proven experience in award management, preferably within the humanitarian or non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with the U.S. Government as a donor and partner.
  • Proven ability to manage a complex and varied workload, while adhering to tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven attention to detail, ability to multi-task and able to make independent decisions as appropriate.


  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite


  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Willingness and ability to travel both domestically and internationally-at times to countries with insecure environments-at a minimum 10% of the time and as required, to support high-priority humanitarian responses, strategic initiatives, and project implementation.


Preferred qualifications for the role



  • Professional proficiency in speaking and writing in a second, relevant language (Arabic, Spanish, or French) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with international humanitarian (emergency) response at field and/or home office-level.
  • Experience implementing high value, high risk US Government projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with USAID and BPRM as donors and partners.



Compensation

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:



  • Geo 1 - NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $84,150 - $94,050 base salary


  • Geo 2 - Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $76,500 - $85,500 base salary
  • Geo 3 - Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $68,850 - $76,950 base salary


The salary ranges listed above are for US based candidates. For candidates located outside of the US, salary ranges will be based on the salary scales of the local employer of record. Actual base salary may vary based on, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here).
