Responsibilities for this job include the oversight, monitoring and support of current and developing laboratories, facilities, equipment, and supplies that directly and indirectly serve the educational and research mission of Thomas Jefferson University Engineering programs. The technical associate will coordinate operational activities in engineering laboratory spaces, providing support services to users. Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with various regulations and standards. Coordinates the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Maintenance and Repair: ensure that all equipment is functioning optimally.
  • Safety Compliance: implement and enforce safety protocols, including proper use, storage, and disposal of chemicals, and providing training on safe lab practices for all users of the engineering lab.
  • Equipment Calibration: responsible for calibrating equipment regularly to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
  • Technical Support: serves as a resource for troubleshooting problems, providing guidance, and offering technical support as needed for classroom laboratory exercises, student work, and research projects.
  • Inventory Management: maintain an inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment, including ordering supplies, tracking usage, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Student worker supervision: supervise work-study students including training and oversight of lab monitors.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):

The successful candidate should be self-motivated and educationally focused with background, experience, and ability that includes several of the following:

  • Project management and data base management to maintain inventories
  • Trouble-shoot mechanical systems
  • Trouble-shoot electronic and mechatronic systems
  • Operation and basic maintenance of lab equipment, including, but not limited to: 3D printers, laser cutter, testing equipment, and machining equipment.
  • Work in hands-on, educational lab environments with students and faculty
  • Promote and support a safe, clean, and organized educational laboratory environment
  • Computational abilities including programs in the MS Office suite and computer programming (C++ or python)
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and organizations within the university system ability to supervise student workers
  • Familiarity with CAD software
  • Willingness to learn how to use, calibrate, and maintain new equipment

The candidate should have an ability and willingness to learn and support lab activities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • A minimum of high-school diploma with proven work experience and an ability to work within a STEM-based educational environment.
  • Bachelor of Science or Associates degree in a related field is preferred.

AND

Experience:

  • 3-5 years experience in an engineering field.
