Primary Purpose of the Position
The primary purpose of the position is to teach undergraduate and research courses in the Educator Preparation Program in the Department of Education.

The Department of Education provides professional courses and services to all teacher education programs, including admission to teacher education, field experiences, pre-clinical, and student teaching under the guidance of experienced cooperating teachers and university supervisors. The mission of the Department of Education at Winston-Salem State University is to prepare students through best practices to become critical thinkers, effective practitioners and leaders who meet the diverse educational needs of P-12 students in an evolving 21st century global society.

The faculty in the Department of Education seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching Birth through Kindergarten Education to undergraduate and graduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.. The following qualifications and skills are required for this position:

  • Must possess a doctoral degree in Birth through Kindergarten Education or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Birth through Kindergarten teaching license or the qualifications to obtain one.
  • Must possess a minimum of three years of teaching experience in at least one of the specified program areas.
  • Must demonstrate a history of teaching undergraduate and graduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Must provide demonstrable evidence of utilizing technology (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to engage students in the learning process.
  • Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to enhance curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Must illustrate evidence of situating undergraduate candidates in undergraduate research experiences and mentoring them through the process or evidence of engaging students in study abroad, internship opportunities, or community service learning.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to their professional growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Faculty in the Department of Education prefer applications from candidates who demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Have experience or certification in an additional teacher education program area such as Elementary, Middle Grades, Special Education;
  • Have previous post secondary teaching experience;
  • Possess knowledge and experience in Science of Reading research and classroom implementation;
  • Possess knowledge and experience with edTPA;
  • Have knowledge or experience with program accreditation, particularly CAEP accreditation;
  • Have the ability and experience related to funded grant proposals and research.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Birth through Kindergarten Education either face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online and must communicate continuously with students as s/he monitors student progress for student success. The successful candidate must construct a course syllabi, create, and present relevant course- and content-related activities, and assess and evaluate student learning. The selected candidate will supervise the clinical experiences of Birth through Kindergarten Education preclinical and clinical interns and advise undergraduate and graduate majors. The successful candidate must hold office hours each week, meet with the department chair regularly, and participate consistently in departmental and College meetings.
Additionally, the ideal candidate articulates an active research agenda and must produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote teaching and learning of the discipline. The successful candidate must also facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national, and international professional conferences, and meetings. The successful candidate will engage in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams.
The successful candidate must engage in departmental, College, University, community, and professional organization service activities. At the department, College, and University levels, the faculty member will serve on committees that advance the mission of the academic unit and the institution. The faculty member must also work closely with the K-12 public schools and other community stakeholders to support student development. The successful candidate must maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations and assist these groups with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and grant proposals, and other engagement opportunities.
