Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The position is essential for maintaining the appearance and conditions of the grounds at NCCU.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to mow and trim turf grass; prune trees, shrubs, and plants; plant flowers, trees, and shrubs; pull and spray weeds; cultivating and mulching landscape beds; spray herbicides; leaf removal; snow and ice removal from the university roads and walkways.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate must possess: Knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices; knowledge of cultivation, pruning, spraying and trimming requirements for trees and shrubs; ability to perform heavy to medium physical work; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to multi task in addition to bending and stooping frequently; ability to work independently and to take initiative and follow through until completion or resolution of assignments; ability to exercise judgement and discretion in problem solving; ability to perform basic computer skills; ability to follow written instruction. A valid drivers license is preferred.
Minimum Education/Experience
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

Working knowledge of plant maintenance
procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance. Ability to observe plants and identify plants and plant problems, assess condition and health of plants. Ability to respond to standard problems, and assist or make recommendations for solutions
to non-standard problems.
Ability to perform a variety of routine and nonrecurring tasks. Ability to determine appropriate tools, equipment and vehicles.
Ability to administer safe application of various chemicals and nutrient supplements and the use of equipment to perform the tasks. Working knowledge of the different species in the geographical area to which assigned, as well as an understanding of common diseases, nutritional issues and pests that pose a threat to the trees' health.
