Job Description

The SCMA Post-Baccalaureate Marketing & Communications Assistant position offers a recent college graduate the opportunity to learn about the museum field and museum marketing and communications through direct professional experience. The Post-Baccalaureate Marketing & Communications Assistant has a core set of administrative responsibilities and have access to professional development opportunities and academic resources at Smith College.

Working closely with the Marketing and Communications staff,the Post-Baccalaureate Marketing & Communications Assistant will provide administrative, technical, and creative support for the broad range of marketing and communications strategies and activities undertaken by the Marketing & Communications (Marcom) Department at SCMA. All responsibilities are designed to connect the museum with its key constituents as well as with the broader community. Emphasis will be placed on building connections with undergraduate audiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative and Program Support (70%):

  • Help sustain and build program content via SCMA's social media (Facebook and Instagram), e-blast communications, and website;

  • Design and develop student- and community-focused marketing materials related to SCMA programs and exhibitions for both print and online outlets;

  • Publicize exhibitions, installations and SCMA's permanent collection via onsite signage and online communications

  • Help promote, staff, and coordinate documentation for major programs offered by the museum;

  • Support the development and distribution of media announcements on a wide variety of topics, from new acquisitions to special exhibitions;

  • Participate in various cross-departmental teams at SCMA;

  • Assist with the production of the museum's annual report;

  • Provide support as needed for other routine operations including: meetingcoordination, mailings, museum signage, departmental phone coverage, and othertasks as assigned.

Special Project (20%):

  • With supervisor support and mentorship, conceptualize, plan and implement an original project that engages SCMA audiences and aligns with the museum's mission and departmental goals;.

  • Coordinate with internal and external partners on implementing the project. This project typically culminates in the second year of the fellowship.

Professional Development (10%):

  • With supervisor guidance, identify and participate in workshops and trainings that contribute to the fellow's learning and skill-building in museum marketing and communications;.

  • Represent SCMA at local, regional and national meetings, workshops, lectures, conferences, and/or other learning opportunities that support the interests of the individual and department, as approved by the Associate Director of Communications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree completed within the past 5 years (and have not yet pursued or earned a Master's degree) and a commitment to ongoing learning.

  • An interest in learning about museum marketing and communications.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and social media skills.

  • Demonstrated technical and design experience with Photoshop and/or InDesign. Portfolio required;

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and to work independently to meet deadlines

  • Available to work evening programs as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the museum field or a cultural institution is desirable.

  • Proficiency working within Google Suite and similar computer applications

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
