Job Summary

Under supervision, perform routine animal husbandry tasks for equines. Duties include cleaning, feeding, and watering of animals; the cleaning and repair of all animal enclosures and related ancillary equipment; the maintenance of animal care areas; observing equine appearance and behavior and reporting changes to appropriate personnel; handling horses for movement on property or other requested tasks.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No Minimum Education required.
  • No Minimum Work Experience required.
  • Ability to safely operate vehicles & heavy equipment (tractors, hay squeeze, etc.) hand tools, power tools and landscape tools.
  • Ability to use tools/cleaning equipment to properly clean and disinfect animal enclosures.
  • Ability to comply with all standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, guidelines, safety regulations and University policy.
  • Ability to work in an environment where horses are used for teaching and research.
  • Skills to handle equines and/or livestock and recognize signs of illness or injury.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to make minor facility repairs (to barns, fences, corrals, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within six months of hire.

The Center for Equine Health (CEH) is comprised of 115 acres containing numerous buildings, barns, dry lots and pastureland. The facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is dedicated to advancing the health, welfare, performance and veterinary care of horses through research, education and public service.

Must be able and willing to work in an environment where animals are used in research. Work required weekends and holidays; work occasional overtime; work variable hours depending on current needs. Lunch hours may vary and will be established per the current needs of the unit. Work schedule subject to change with prior notification. Must possess and maintain a valid California drivers license and participation in Department of Motor Vehicles Pull-Notice System required. Required attendance at Animal Technician training classes at department's discretion.
