Project/Unit Description

The Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks a qualified candidate for the position of ACL Machine Intelligence and Spectrum Technologies (MIST) Chief Scientist. This position will collaborate closely with Division leadership, the ACL Chief Scientist and Engineer, and the ACL Lab Director to lead and coordinate Independent Research and Development (IRAD) activities that align with ACL's strategic priorities. The successful candidate will balance this role in addition to conducting sponsored research in close collaboration with other scientists and engineers.

MIST researches harnessing the power of machine intelligence to expedite the processing of signal information, improving the speed of analysis providing advantage to friendly forces. MIST also conducts other machine intelligence and radar frequency sensor research for our government sponsors. ACL develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL's research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.


Job Purpose

The Division Chief Scientist helps direct and oversees the division's internal research and development (IRAD) program. The division chief scientist ensures IRAD activities will maintain and grow the division's competitive position by: formulating and executing key elements of the division's strategy, working closely with researchers and unit leads in the alignment of IRAD with other investments and awards, developing collaborations across other labs (Division Chief Scientists in particular), representing the division's opportunities and challenges through reporting to the Lab Chief Scientist, and connecting with the broader research and sponsor community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate strategic direction and plans for the MIST IRAD investments
  • Manage the Division's IRAD portfolio, including financial oversight, technical oversight, reporting to the Laboratory Chief Scientist, and securing all required approvals, reporting and documentation
  • Participate in all Laboratory Chief Scientist Council meetings, including technical reviews, strategy sessions, administrative discussions, and planning
  • Articulate IRAD technical and funding priorities to the Laboratory Chief Scientist and Division Chief
  • Work with researchers both within the Division and across the broader organization (to include Georgia Tech Resident Instruction) to develop concepts with potential for high impact to GTRI, Georgia Tech, and the nation
  • Support the Division Chief with strategic business development opportunities.


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 9 years experience with BS, 7 years experience with MS, 4 years experience with PhD
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more technical areas relevant to the Division
  • Able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Ph.D. in a field closely-related to ACL's core competencies
  • Prior leadership of IRAD projects and experience with IRAD proposals and execution
  • Prior leadership of sponsored research projects and sponsor interactions
  • A strong background in facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Machine Intelligence, Electrical Engineer, Math, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Machine Intelligence, Electrical Engineer, Math, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Machine Intelligence, Electrical Engineer, Math, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.


Clearance Type Required
