Summary:

The Materials Manager is responsible for directing and controlling the movement of materials into and within the plant, along with managing key materials-related functions including Purchasing, Production Planning and Expediting, Shipping, Receiving, and Inventory.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

  • Provide guidance and direction to the Materials Department, including setting and monitoring performance standards, quality standards, and ISO compliance.
  • Responsible for performance evaluation and development of the managers and/or supervisors over the stockroom, shipping, receiving, purchasing, planning and shop floor expediting.
  • Make decisions concerning inventory requirements, staffing requirements, equipment/software requirements, and work procedures in cooperation with the management team.
  • Balance and coordinate the workloads and responsibilities of the employees within the Materials organization.
  • Manage the planning of materials through the manufacturing process, insuring on-time shipments and excellent customer satisfaction.
  • Manage purchased material inventory to support master production schedule, inventory objectives and customer service levels.
  • Execute strategies and plans to meet short and long-term supply chain management requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts in purchasing management processes, Supplier Risk Management and Vendor Data Management.
  • Maintain and facilitate the accurate control and accountability of Shields Mfg. inventory.
  • Coordinate with or lead Excess & Obsolete inventory data reporting, disposition, withdrawal and disposal processes with Procurement, Program Managers, and Finance, as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement a material logistics strategy that optimizes the storage and flow of purchased and fabricated materials.
  • Manage supply chain performance, including quality, cost and on-time delivery performance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain MRP functions and rules and continuously drive for improvements in the system (usage, accuracy, compliance, etc.) and integration into the manufacturing process.
  • Assist in the management and implementation of the MRP database providing guidance and support to all users.
  • Ensure that standard inventory control techniques and procedures are developed and implemented.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage the performance of physical inventories and/or cycle counting as required to meet fiscal reporting requirements.
  • Present to management, recommended improvements to existing processes and methodologies, with a constant focus on continuous improvement.
  • Create and monitor cost controls to improve the profitability of the manufacturing process.
  • Manage indirect materials suppliers and tooling/MRO purchase and disbursement process.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in Materials Management, Business Administration, or other related field. Relevant equivalent work experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Certification including, but not limited to: APICS, Certified Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and/or Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM), is strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years' demonstrated successful experience in Materials Management, Purchasing, and/or Supply Chain Management within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and cost management.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute action plans that achieve company goals.
  • Demonstrated ability and a proven track record in year over year cost reduction and lead-time improvements.
  • Significant emphasis will be required in the Production Control process and functional system support with a minimum of 3 years of experience. Prior management experience is required.
  • Prior experience with make versus buy decisions, as well as with managing outside suppliers of goods and services.
  • In-depth knowledge of computerized manufacturing systems, and concepts (MRP / Shop Floor Control); E2 preferred.
  • Strong communications skills - both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Detail orientated, with exceptional organizational skills.
  • Functional understanding of engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
