About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Solution Development Director responsible for all custom software systems, processes, and tools. Balances technical depth and business acumen to ensure software investments are strategic and maximize value. Leads team that designs, builds and maintains software systems leveraging best practices from Agile, Lean and DevOps. Utilizes the latest Microsoft Azure, Amazon cloud and other software platforms to provide flexible systems that meet our scientific business needs. Provides expert opinions on "buy vs build" strategic discussions.

Leads the software development team responsible for building new solutions as well as the data science team of Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning experts applying their skills to both client- and employee-facing technology projects. Works closely with our Field Data Collection/Tablet team to build and support our scientific field collection needs.

Establishes and delivers continuous improvement to the company's digital collaboration capabilities. Contributes technical perspective to strategic business discussions and advocates for best practices. This is a regular, benefits eligible, full time, salaried position, eligible for remote work within the US, or in any SWCA office nationwide.

What you will accomplish

  • Plan for and use resources efficiently, always look for ways to reduce costs, create accurate and realistic budgets, track and adjust budgets, contribute to budget planning.
  • Work with Technology PMO to establish project goals, milestones, and procedures, define roles and responsibilities, acquire project resources, coordinate projects throughout the company, monitor project progress, and manage multiple projects.
  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance customer experience.
  • Stay abreast of trends in Agile, Cloud and DevOps technologies and systems.
  • Lead teams to envision, design and implement best in class features and supportability for the business with the highest quality to meet the objectives of the business through software development and systems automation.
  • Understand changing business needs and advocate for proactive investment (architecture changes, refactoring, etc.) to maintain optimal delivery velocity without sacrificing quality.
  • Leverage commercial off the shelf systems to optimize software delivery when selected. Solid understanding of software contracts and financial administration.
  • Ensure that software delivery systems in cloud or virtual environments are aligned with operational and system company objectives and meet rapidly evolving security standards.
  • Lead regular staff meetings to communicate corporate messages, project updates, and upcoming work to team members.
  • Provide forward-thinking guidance and direction for the development and implementation of new technologies, software, and innovative processes.
  • Work with vendors and across the Technology team to ensure we secure the appropriate licensing and service agreements so that our staff have the right tools to do their jobs.
  • Participate in presentations, client interviews, and other business development activities.
  • Seek feedback from stakeholders and communicate proactively across those groups.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration or related field.
  • 10+ years related software/systems experience.
  • 5+ years' experience building, configuring and supporting information systems in consulting firm or related service business and knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
  • 3+ years of management experience in a company of similar (1200) or larger size.
  • Proven experience and knowledge in software development, database management, and project management, as well as the commercial support of these systems.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex solutions on time and on budget.
  • Proven experience developing team skills, mentoring and ability to resolve issues that arise in an efficient and diplomatic manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge of Javascript, .Net, Java, and Python required. Familiarity with PowerApps, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data.

Additional Information:

  • Ability to travel 25% of the time to regional offices to meet with managers and team members.

An employee in this position can expect an annual salary of $153,878-$201,052/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
