About the Role

The Grid Operations Training Simulator Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of our Operator Training Simulator. You will directly support real-time operators and operator trainers by providing dynamic, realistic simulations that cover a wide range of system conditions. Your efforts will help ensure our teams are well-prepared to manage abnormal and crisis situations with confidence and precision.

Day in life:
  • Operate and maintain the Operator Training Simulator to deliver effective training experiences.
  • Develop and execute realistic training simulations tailored to various system scenarios, from routine operations to critical emergencies.
  • Collaborate with operator trainers to design programs that enhance skill development and readiness.
  • Provide simulator demonstrations for senior leadership, showcasing training capabilities and system preparedness.
  • Contribute to more reliable power delivery, improved safety, and enhanced reliability for the Western Interconnection.

Grid Operations ensures the reliable operation of transmission and distribution systems in compliance with electric system reliability standards, applicable tariffs, and regulatory requirements. We prioritize actions that protect electrical equipment and ensure public safety, while maintaining service reliability for our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Process Improvements Provides operational expertise in the development of and continuous improvements to SCC System Operator internal and external situational awareness tools, alarming, processes, procedures; collects feedback to identify, review, develop and implement needed changes based upon priorities; develops and proctors training material including classroom, computer-based training and simulation in coordination with the SCC System Operator Trainer; supports projects involving multiple groups to improve PGE operational excellence; coordinates and resolves escalated real-time issues raised by other team members; works on and leads other projects as needed.
  • Internal/External Coordination Coordinates with other teams within Grid; represents Grid Operations within PGE; communicates with external entities; provides individuals or small groups with tours of the SCC.
  • Projects Leads or participates in projects developing systems and applications used in the Control Center, including identifying overall business objectives, business requirements and user acceptance criteria. Develops classroom, computer-based training and simulation training material in coordination with the SCC System Operator Trainer. Provides technical support as assigned.
  • Consultation Serves as a department subject matter expert providing technical assistance. Provides training or assists in training SCC System Operators.

Qualifications

Required Staff Level/p3:

  • Education Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, information systems or relevant field of study or equivalent experience.
  • Experience Typically, five or more years in Balancing Authority and/or Transmission Operator real-time operations.
  • Certifications, Licenses and Training NERC System Operator certification preferred.

Required Senior Level/p4:

  • Education Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, information systems or relevant field of study or equivalent experience.
  • Experience Typically, eight or more years in Balancing Authority and/or Transmission Operator real-time operations.
  • Certifications, Licenses and Training NERC System Operator certification preferred.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of AspenTech OSI Monarch products is highly preferred.
  • PGE familiarity with PGE software applications used in Grid Operations preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge of systems used in department
  • Intermediate skills in relationship building
  • Intermediate knowledge of systems administration principles
  • Working knowledge of coding and programming languages
  • Working skills in facilitation
  • Intermediate knowledge of laws and regulations related to department operations
  • Intermediate knowledge of security protocols related to grid operations
  • Working skills in technical writing
  • Working skills in process improvement
  • Working skills in project management
  • Working skills in reporting and analytics
  • Working skills in user acceptance and regression testing General

Schedule/Attendance

  • Ability to adhere to pre-established schedule, including start/stop time and break/lunch schedule
  • Ability to work long hours
  • Ability to work a variable schedule
  • Ability to report to work and perform work during periods of severe inclement weather
  • Ability to consistently meet attendance standards for regular, reliable, predictable, full-time attendance
  • Ability to work shift schedule Ability to work on-call schedule

Physical Capabilities

  • Driving/travel/commute: Daily within service territory - Occasionally (one to two times a month or less)
  • Computer use (use computer regularly for entire work shift)

Environment- Indoor/Outdoor:

  • Office

Compensation Range:

$96,300.00 - $189,875.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
