Description

Under the supervision of the Division Administrator, the primary responsibility of the Hospital Lab Technician II is on-call preservation and procurement of cadaveric donor organs for transplant. The HLTII verifies donor and recipient medical information to ensure compatibility of organs and tissues, reviewing donor charts to confirm consent, medical/social history, and pertinent clinical information. The HLT II must complete intraoperative charts, operative reports, and label specimens in accordance with UCLA and UNOS policies, CMS regulations, and HIPAA. Using sterile technique, the HLT II will perfuse and preserve donor organs per UCLA standard operating procedures and protocols. The HLTII will assist in the coordination of medevac transportation to and from the donor facility and the relay of all pertinent information between the procurement team, transplant center, and organ procurement organization. The HLTII is ultimately responsible for the speedy and safe transportation of the donor organs back to UCLA. Other duties include assisting in the proper packaging of the donor organs and maintaining inventory of necessary supplies, including but not limited to coolers, recovery packs, perfusion supplies, and preservation solutions. Under the guidance and supervision of the Chief of Procurement and Transplant Services QA Manager, HLT II's will gather data (as necessary) for Transplant Administration QAPI projects and clinical studies as necessary.

Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts. Frequent travel within North America is required. Must reside sufficiently close to UCLA Medical Center to respond on short notice if necessary. This position requires a background in health sciences or prior clinical experience, as well as an overall understanding of organ transplantation. Requires superior organization, communication, and interpersonal skills to communicate/coordinate with multidisciplinary teams utilizing a wide range of alternatives in problem solving situations, demonstrating a high degree of professional competence and skill.

Salary Range: $32.77-$43.22/hourly

Qualifications

Required:

  • Working knowledge of the use, function and operation of operating room equipment
  • Knowledge of UNOS policy as related to organ procurement
  • Ability to speak, write and read English
  • Ability to follow through on all assignments
  • Ability to move heavy objects
  • Ability to work on call whenever assigned

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in the life sciences
  • Working knowledge of basic anatomy and correct terminology
  • Experience working in a clinical hospital setting
