Performs a wide range of clerical and technical functions in support of the pharmacy department in those aspects of pharmacy that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Functions in accordance with established guidelines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Assists supervisor or manager in support of the pharmacy department including, but not limited to, coordination of scheduling, orienting and training new employees, and leading specific divisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, EXPEREINCE, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school diploma or Equivalent.

2. Must be registered with the WV Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire.

3. Three years pharmacy experience. Experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience required AND nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) within 9 months of hire AND Registered with the WV Board of Pharmacy within 9 months of hire.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Assigns, coordinates, and monitors the workflow of Pharmacy Technicians to provide efficient drug distribution.

2. Routinely evaluates technician responsibilities and distributes in efficient and equitable manner.

3. Coordinates technician projects and assignments with pharmacy managers to achieve hospital and department goals.

4. Assists in the education and training of pharmacy technicians.

5. Conducts and documents technician departmental orientation and training.Coordinates technician orientation in all pharmacy service areas.

6. Annually assists technician competency assessments and make improvements when necessary.

7. Coordinates continuing education programs for pharmacy technicians in the department.

8. Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external, accredited technician training programs.

9. Completes department work schedule as needed.

10. Performs the essential duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician when scheduled to staff and/or when working an open shift.

11. Follows up to insure that requested projects are completed properly.

12. Identifies and completes projects and initiatives independently or with minimum oversight of management.

13. Certain duties cannot be assigned to Pharmacy Technicians because these duties can only be performed by pharmacists.These restrictions are regulated at state and federal levels and must be followed closely:

  • Only pharmacists can receive oral prescriptions from prescribers or prescribers' authorized designees (this refers primarily to new telephone orders).
  • Only pharmacists can consult with prescribers or prescribers' designees about patients' prescriptions.
  • Only pharmacists can provide confidential patient information to other health professionals or insurance companies.
  • Only pharmacists can check medications before dispensing them to patients (in states where technicians can prepare or package prescriptions, they do so under the direct supervision of a pharmacist).
  • Only pharmacists can consult with patients about prescribed medication use and other health issues
  • Only pharmacists can recommend over-the-counter medications.

1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk and stand or sit for long periods of time.

2. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and must be able to push 50 pounds.
