Director, Disease Strategy Finance Business Partner

Job Description

Vertex continues to grow at a rapid pace with challenging and exciting opportunities for motivated professionals that would like to join and contribute to execute the Vertex mission. With this aim the finance team is creating a new role for a future leader in Vertex's organization. The Director DST Finance will provide financial direction and strategic insight to our Disease Strategy Teams (DSTs) - groups created to play a key role as the "owners" of each disease area, driving strategy and ensuring execution.

This role will partner closely with Disease Area Executives to help define and deliver against our goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs and provide strategic decision support, influencing decisions and identifying opportunities to invest, save costs and mitigate risks on a global basis. This role will also conduct corporate-level cross functional valuations, modeling and other analysis to help drive our decision-making process.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represents Finance in DSTs across the organization, coordinating appropriate financial analyses, and driving the development of reporting and analytics for each program.
  • Provides strategic decision support to enable clear understanding of financial impacts of potential business cases and/or planning scenarios for multiple diseases at different stages of development.
  • Partners with Disease Area Executives, Program Managers and a wide range of core member from different areas of Vertex represented in DSTs
  • Coordinates with other members of the finance team including Corporate, R&D, Commercial and CMC Finance as well as other CFO organization areas like Accounting, Tax and Treasury, promoting strong communication and collaboration across.
  • Proactively identifies, designs and implements enhancements to existing processes to drive efficiency across the teams.
  • Leads the DST finance team as a center of excellence for all modeling, valuation and ad hoc analysis used for a wide range of decisions, including presentations at Executive Committee level meetings.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or Accounting required. MBA and/or other advanced degree preferred
  • Typically requires 10 years of relevant experience in a finance role demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills and a track record of success working in a team-based environment or the equivalent combination of education and experience

Important Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotech or consulting.
  • Business partnering with C-Suite and executive level members of the organization.
  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint; Knowledge of Hyperion.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions-especially portfolio analysis, valuation, and complex business questions.
  • Ability to lead and drive change in a developing business environment, coordinating processes involving large numbers of people, complex systems, and tight deadlines across multiple time zones.
  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.
