Job Overview:

Assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimens that assist physicians in the diagnosis of clinical management of patients. Assumes responsibility for recognizing results or problems that require referral to Technical Specialist, Pathologist or Administrative Coordinator. Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology or related sciences.
  • Knowledge of specialized principles or techniques which would normally be obtained through a formal two year academic program.

Preferred:

  • Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical laboratory technology, such as American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to investigate problems and follow through when needed. Ability to make the decision as to when results should be repeated.
  • Able to evaluate specimen criteria of acceptability. Demonstrates absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results.
  • Complies with all Standard Precautions, Infection Control, fire and Safety, Right to Know and Hazardous Waste procedures as required by the hospital and other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of all procedures within the department.
  • Demonstrates proficiency by receiving acceptable performance on State, CAP, AABB, Joint Commission and internal proficiency surveys.
  • Evaluates results of patient specimens with regard to previous results and diagnosis.
  • If required, able to perform all skills and techniques required to proficiently perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on all age groups, to include, but not limited to: vacutainer, butterfly, syringe, microtainer, and blood culture collection.
  • Operates automated laboratory instrumentation assigned to designated department and/or shift.
  • Performs all manual technical procedures assigned to designated department
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or directed within scope of department needs and capabilities
  • Performs troubleshooting, maintenance and repair procedures on automated analyzers as required.
  • Responsible for accurate performance and participation in both internal and external quality assurance policies and programs.
  • Responsible for proper documentation of patient results. This is to include, but is not limited to, the Panic Value Call policy.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of new methods and procedures under the direction of the Department Supervisor.
  • Responsible for the identification of patients/specimens in compliance with all hospital and regulatory requirements.
