NDT Penetrant Inspector II An NDT Penetrant Inspector 2 shall have the skills and knowledge to set up and calibrate equipment, conduct tests, and to interpret, evaluate, and document results in accordance with procedures approved by the appropriate NDT Penetrant Inspector 3. The Inspector shall be thoroughly familiar with the scope, theory, and limitations of the Penetrant method, and shall be capable of directing the work of trainees and Level 1 personnel. The Inspector shall be familiar with the codes and standards that control the method as utilized by Ducommun AeroStructures. Who are we? Founded in 1849, Ducommun is the oldest company in California. Job Summary * Inspects all types of assemblies and sub-assemblies made from metal alloy materials, including castings, forgings, machined parts, and weldments for defects, flaws and other discontinuities through the operation of portable and stationary liquid penetrant inspection equipment. * Conducts all necessary calibration and performance checks of the penetrant system. * Evaluates defect indications for size, type, and location. * Makes accept/reject determinations per the applicable specifications. * Reviews shop planning documents to determine that the appropriate manufacturing planning steps have been accomplished and verified. * Prepares and maintains inspection records, rejection tags, and related documentation in accordance with written procedures. * Generates defect drawings and Material Review Record (MRR) rejection documentation. * Recommends alternate NDT methods for verifying the nature and cause of detected defects. * Interfaces with various manufacturing departments to help resolve root causes of manufacturing defects. * Directs the work of trainees and Level I personnel. * Develops and documents techniques for inspecting new hardware using the penetrant method for submittal to the appropriate NDT Level 3. * Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area. * Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position. Physical Demands & Work Conditions * Working conditions are: 100% manufacturing environment. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. * The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and airborne particles. * Noise level is usually moderate. * Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas. * Hearing protection must be worn in designated areas. * Fully enclosed shoes of solid, leather construction with a steel or composite toe cap (ANSI Z41 compliant) must be worn in all manufacturing areas. * Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. * Frequently required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.* Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Required Skills and Qualification * Ability to read and interpret customer specifications. * Ability to use measuring instruments including but not limited to calipers, micrometers, and light meter. * Awareness of calibration certification of equipment. * Must be able to comply with specific safety policies. * Read and understand internal procedures and policies. * Understand and follow through on both verbal and written instructions. * Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook. * Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. * Annual eye exam is required.* Annual baseline hearing test is required. Required Experience and Education * High school diploma or equivalent required. * An NDT Inspector Penetrant Level 2 must be able to demonstrate certification to National Aerospace Standard 410. * New hire applicants must provide proof of either previous certification to the above or evidence of the necessary training and experience required to be certified to the above, and be able to complete with a passing score, a Penetrant Level 2 certification examination in accordance with the requirements of National Aerospace Standard 410. * An NDT Inspector Penetrant Level 2 must be able to document a minimum of 8 hours of training if a previous Level 1 certification had been held, or 16 hours if no previous Level 1 certification had been held. * All training must be documented as part of a program approved by an NDT Level 3 and which meets the training program requirements of National Aerospace Standard 410. * NDT Inspectors Penetrant Level 2 must be able to document sufficient practical experience to assure they are capable of performing the duties noted in the above job description, as well as a minimum of 270 hours of experience in accordance with the requirements of National Aerospace Standard 410. * Basic Computer Skills - able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance.
