The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise from nonproliferation to research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing, management, and transportation. The Verification Technologies group within NND at ORNL seeks applications for a Senior Nonproliferation Systems Engineer.

We are seeking a candidate who will apply an engineering skillset in collaboration with project managers, domain experts, and other researchers to advance verification systems for nuclear material control & accounting, international safeguards, and arms control applications. This work includes the development of research proposals, support for working groups and strategic efforts, and reporting of R&D results in peer-reviewed journal publications, conference papers and technical reports.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop technical approaches and integrated systems to support the verification needs as applied to nuclear material control & accounting, international safeguards, and arms control applications.
  • Provide technical leadership for projects, working with customers to meet deliverables and address and resolve technical and/or system issues.
  • Document and/or publish technical work as appropriate in user manuals, technical reports, journals, and conference papers.
  • Develop and lead research proposals to generate new funding.
  • Mentor staff who are new to nonproliferation missions.
  • Perform work activities in nuclear and/or radiological facilities/environments.
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in engineering, scientific, nonproliferation, or related field and six (6) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with domestic and/or international nuclear safeguards and security.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to excel in a team environment with peers, mentors, and non-subject matter experts.
  • Knowledge of traditional and/or advanced nuclear fuel cycles.
  • Knowledge of International Atomic Energy Agency international safeguards and/or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission material control and accountancy.
  • Proficiency in one or more CAD software packages for mechanical and/or electronics design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoDesk, Altium, OrCAD).
  • Proficiency with one or more scientific programming languages for data analysis (e.g., Python, Matlab, R).
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas desired:
    • Software development (in C++, C#, Python, Java, or similar) for desktop or embedded computing platforms including the use of integrated development environments, object-oriented programming, and version control systems (e.g., GIT).
    • Design of mechanical parts, enclosures, and complex systems including creation of 3D models, 2D detail drawings, selection of commercial of-the-shelf parts, creation of bills of material, and material selection for fabrication.
    • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design from requirements through schematic capture, layout, routing, and fabrication.
