Materials Process and Contamination Control Engineer

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) in Logan, UT is seeking a Materials Process Engineer with demonstrated experience in aerospace materials and contamination control. This position will provide expert support to SDL's space-based sensor and satellite development programs.

The preferred candidate will have experience in analysis of space hardware designs and mission objectives to derive and implement material selection and cleanliness requirements, preparation of associated contamination control plans, material usage lists and agreements, development of test plans and work instructions associated with the fabrication of space hardware, and the application of laboratory methods to assess cleanliness or characterize material performance. Candidates should also be familiar with analytical approaches used to model aerospace contamination phenomenology such as: the redistribution of contaminants between sources and sinks in vacuum, gas flow during hardware purge or launch depressurization, and degradation due to contamination or space environment exposure on thermal, mechanical, or optical performance of aerospace materials. Candidates will be responsible for preparation and delivery of technical presentations to NASA, DOD, or commercial customers during design reviews and while preparing flight hardware for launch.

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in chemistry, physics, or engineering discipline with at least 2 years of relevant M&P and contamination control experience in spacecraft technology or space science engineering (applicants with advanced degrees and relevant experience are also encouraged to apply)
  • Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications,experience, and expertise in the following areas should be highlighted:
  • Leading an M&P/ contamination control effort
  • Developing and analyzing materials and processes lists against industry requirements
  • Developing program-specific contamination control plans
  • Implementing aerospace and defense industry standards for materials and processes and contamination control
  • Contamination control for cleanroom environments
  • Developing, deploying, and supporting organizational adoption of M&P/ contamination control processes to ensure best practices are used across programs
  • Materials testing and analysis on a wide range of materials
  • Issue resolution and failure investigations
  • Training and mentoring junior personnel
  • 10 years of relevant M&P and contamination control experience in spacecraft technology or space science engineering

Hands-on experience with cryogenic instrumentation, high vacuum technology, mass spectrometry, and materials analysis is also highly desirable.
