Job Summary

This position is responsible for overseeing multiple acute inpatient units across (MS, Telemetry, Acute Rehabilitation Unit) across the two hospitals (St. Mary's Medical Center & St. Francis Hospital). It will also assist in managing the operations of smaller departments such as acute inpatient dialysis, wound care, infusion center, and radiation oncology during the transition period to UCSH Health. The goals of the departments will be geared towards the true north pillars & strategic initiatives of patient experience (creating confidence in the care we provide), quality & safety (improving clinical outcomes & working toward zero harm), creating an optimal work environment (people), & create strategy to sustain a financially viable organization through supporting growth activation efforts, access to care, promoting efficiency. From a nursing department standpoint, the role is critical in preparing the department for magnet recognition readiness through a solid infrastructure for shared governance.

Participates with leadership to develop short- and long term strategies. Fosters change management skills in subordinate leadership to promote an agile and flexible workforce. Represents nursing on cross-functional committees; has external presence in community and professional organizations and societies. Oversees large, multiple departments. Ensures that quality nursing care is provided and in alignment with internal policy and external regulations for the medical center and / or health system.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

The salary range for this position is $266,324 - $290,984 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The role will have accountability for approximately more than 250 FTE across departments. The acute inpatient units are licensed to hold about 25 to 30 beds depending on the service. The patient population is highly diverse, with complex medical-surgical needs and underlying mental & psychiatric conditions. St. Mary's and St. Francis hospitals are accredited as primary stroke centers, STEMI receiving, & CARF designated. It is the responsibility of this role to be survey ready & maintain if not elevate the level of accreditation.

Required Qualifications


  • BSN and Master's Degree in health care related field required
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of nursing experience and five (5) years of nurse leadership experience.
  • Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services. Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines.
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • Knowledge, insight, and understanding of business concepts, tools, and processes that are needed for making sound decisions in the context of the company's business; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately in both clinical and non-clinical situations
  • Understanding of the business value of diverse perspectives and opinions and ability to understand, appreciate and employ the unique contributions of associates of varied cultures, nationalities, ethnic backgrounds, genders, ages, points of view, etc.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Doctor of Nursing Practice or PhD or relevant area preferred.
  • Certification in Leadership preferred.

License/Certification

CA RN License required.
