POSITION SUMMARY:

The Taxidermy Specialist preserves and prepares animal skins and parts to create lifelike animal replicas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Creates visually exciting mounts and displays through the practice of taxidermy.
  • Prepares/preserves animal hides, skins, and other parts for the purpose of creating taxidermy specimens.
  • Performs various tasks such as hide preparation, construction of artificial body parts, preparing underpadding for mounts, etc.
  • Uses airbrushing and painting techniques to create more natural or realistic colorations.
  • Removing and preserving animal skulls or constructing them using artificial materials.
  • ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Degree Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Certificate(s) or License(s): certification in a formal taxidermy program preferred
  • Years of experience: 2+ years' experience in taxidermy field

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

  • Ability to work with animal flesh and hides.
  • Ability to work with power tools/saws.
  • Knowledge of different preparation methods and tools of taxidermy.
  • Basic knowledge of wildlife.
  • Artistic background or experience.
  • Ability to effectively adjust to major changes in work tasks or the work environment.
  • Sets high standards of performance for self; assumes responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks.
  • Skilled at establishing courses of action for self to ensure work is completed efficiently and meets established deadlines.
  • Attention to detail.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • N/A

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly moving, lifting, and carrying objects up to 25 pounds
  • Constantly repeat motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Constantly operate machinery and/or power tools
  • Occasionally move and lift objects up to 100 pounds or more
  • Occasionally work in noisy environments
  • Requires eye/hand coordination, use of fine motor skills, works in difficult and confined spaces, pushes, pulls or utilizes manual and bi-manual dexterity.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

  • Performs tasks and duties under general supervision, using established procedures and innovation. Chooses from limited alternatives to resolve problems. Occasional independent judgment is required to complete work assignments. Often makes recommendations to work procedures, policies, and practices.
