Positions in this function are responsible for checking in, scheduling appointments, answering billing questions and managing patient medical records for a clinic.

This is an on-site position.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Verify authorizations are approved for all services
  • Follow up with doctors' offices for outstanding authorizations and denials
  • Promptly notify insurances of in-patient admissions for authorization
  • Create estimates, notify and collect patient liabilities due prior to date of service
  • Verify insurance information is current and active
  • Explain medical benefits/coverage specifics (e.g., procedures/amounts covered, denials of coverage, appeal rights)

Required Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher)
  • 2+ years of customer service experience in a hospital, office setting, customer service setting, or phone support role
  • Must be 18 years of age OR older
  • Ability to work 100% onsite at Redwood City, CA
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 7:00am - 5:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime


Preferred Qualifications:



  • 1+ years of experience with prior authorizations
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products/Google Works
  • Experience in a Hospital Patient Registration Department, Physician office or any medical setting
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology i.e. CPT's, ICD-10
  • Understanding of insurance policies and procedures
  • Experience in insurance reimbursement and financial verification
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics for financial payments
  • Experience in requesting and processing financial payments


Soft Skills:



  • Strong interpersonal, communication and customer service skills


Physical and Work Environment:



  • Standing for long periods of time (10 to 12 hours) while using a workstation on wheels and phone/headset

California Residents Only: The hourly range for California residents is $19.47 to $38.08 per hour. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
