The Lead Special Procedures Technologist is responsible for day-to-day technical operation of the Special Procedures Department.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Special Procedures Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Maintains adequate inventory of materials and various supplies and recommends procurement of necessary supplies.
  • Coordinates scheduling of patients with admitting department, DAR referring physicians, nursing staff and inter-departmental sections.
  • Documents all Medical Center charges and Radiology charges for each exam.
  • Provides instruction to technologists and auxiliary personnel through formal and informal education.
  • Maintains standards of radiation safety throughout the department.
  • Assists Radiologists and other qualified physicians (under Radiologist supervision) in performing Special Procedure.
  • Assumes responsibilities for overtime, weekends, holidays and rotational call.
  • Calculates and selects proper electronic and technical factors, positions patients and x-ray table to achieve optimum radiographs.
  • Ensures patients' safe transfer into and out of Special Procedures suite.
  • Performs minor technical and mechanical repairs.
  • Processes all radiographic images and prepares film/images for review by radiologist.
  • Organizes and coordinates studies with previous x-ray studies.
  • Uses sterile techniques while assisting or setting up sterile trays and necessary equipment.
  • Maintains special procedures room for cleanliness, supplies, etc, following each exam.
  • Operates the Special Procedures area, by ensuring that prescribed schedules, operating policies, and procedures are followed.
  • Allocates work assignments and provides training to staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for proper and efficient operation and maintenance of all equipment and accessories for Special Procedures.
  • Performs required daily clerical duties, which include the use of IDXrad, SMS, Last Word, computer system, patient scheduling, and other computer systems as added by Medical Center.
  • Prepare time cards, 'on-call' coverage sheets and overtime approval forms.
  • Assists Administrative Director in preparation of budget.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Two years training in Radiology Technology with certification.
  • Formal training in Special Procedures.
  • Minimum five years clinical experience in Special Procedures.
  • Registration with ARRT.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Diagnostic Radiography License.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • VI Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or CV Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Contacts:

  • Regular contact with Medical Center personnel, patients and visitors.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
