Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

-Holds a current CRCST certification.
-Experience within an animal hospital setting.
Position Summary
The Central Sterile Supervisor oversees Central Sterilization (CS) at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The CS Supervisor is responsible for the management of inventory and procedures to ensure safe, clean and sterile medical and surgical instruments and equipment to be available throughout the small and large animal hospitals. This position will supervise a team of Central Sterile associates that provide surgical utensils to multiple departments, run sterilization equipment, apply charges into the hospital medical records system and wash/dry/distribute laundry throughout the small and large animal hospitals.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Wide range of knowledge of surgical instrumentation and medical equipment
  • Demonstrates consistent application of aseptic /sterile techniques as indicated
  • Shows professionalism in communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic that builds positive relationships with internal stakeholders as well as with vendors
  • Should be highly organized with ability to set priorities and adjust based on hospital need
  • Able to multi-task and maintain flexibility to meet a fast-paced medical service environment
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, holidays and on call as needed.
  • Hold a current CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification, or ability to achieve within 6 months of employment.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Capable of manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery
  • Safety conscious, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment to manage risks associated with equipment contaminated with feces or bodily fluids (e.g., blood, urine)
  • Driving as needed to perform job related tasks

Sterilization management for surgical instrument/medical equipment:

  • Develop and/or revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure best practices
  • Clean, pack, inspect and sterilize surgical instruments, endoscopy instrumentation and medical/surgical supplies following SOPs
  • Submit repair requests for surgical instruments/medical equipment to the equipment manager/equipment assistant manager
  • Provide oversight of clipper blade cleaning and preventive maintenance

  • Maintains daily schedule of all Central Sterile technicians with purchasing manager to assure adequate staffing levels are maintained to meet surgical processing demands
  • Determines work assignments and schedules to achieve maximum efficiency
  • Performance management for central sterilization technicians - providing annual evaluations and feedback to staff

Supply chain management:

  • Work with Central Warehouse and Purchasing Manager to manage and maintain inventory
  • Assist with procuring specialized surgical instrumentation as requested
  • Perform biannual (twice per year) inventory of central sterilization
  • Fulfill clinical sterile instrument/equipment requests and deliver as needed (including outside of normal business hours)
