Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures ( https://foreign.ecu.edu) is one of sixteen departments at the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. It is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts in foreign languages and literatures with eight concentration areas: Classical Studies, French, French Education, German, German Education, Hispanic Studies, Hispanic Studies Education, and Global Studies; minors in Classical Studies, French, German, and Hispanic Studies; a Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies, and a Hispanic Studies teaching area in the Master of Arts in Teaching ( MAT) program. The department offers Russian and Japanese in support of Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary minors in Russian Studies and Asian Studies, and concentrations in the Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies, Russian Studies and Asian Studies. The department also offers a variety of study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe.
Job Duties
The duties of the Associate Chair include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with drafting the department's class schedules in consultation with the Chair, section chairs, and the faculty.
  • Collects and reports class enrollments, including the numbers of majors and minors, to the department.
  • Uses the enrollment and program needs-driven, evidence-based approach in the 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000-level and graduate course planning to provide the Chair and Administrative Committee with the data needed to make informed decisions.
  • Works with Chair and Administrative Committee to prepare future course rotations that balance enrollment data with program needs.
  • Coordinates advising in the department.
  • Serves as a liaison between IPAR and faculty members conducting assessments for our various programs, including GE:HU assessment.
  • Assumes, with approval of the Dean, the Department Chair's responsibilities in the Chair's absence.


Assumes additional duties, as assigned by the Department Chair, such as the following:

  • Assists with data collection and report writeup for the Annual Program Review.
  • Oversees the department graduation ceremony preparations.
  • Assists with data collection for the College spreadsheets (e.g., educational technology needs, temp fixed-term faculty/buyout sheets, etc.).
  • Assists with preparing the annual budget allocations.
  • Assists with the development of a structured faculty mentoring system for the department.
  • Assists with recruitment efforts.
  • Assists with advising faculty on how to document and report cases of suspected academic integrity violations.
  • Assists with Unit Code or strategic plan revisions.

Must currently hold tenure and the rank of associate professor or full professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
