Global Technical Revenue Accounting Director

General/Position Summary

Vertex is seeking an experienced senior accounting professional to join our Controllership organization as a leader on the global revenue accounting team. Vertex is commercializing our first cell & gene therapy drug and preparing for potential near-term launch in our third disease area. Reporting to the Senior Director of Global Revenue Accounting, the Director will have responsibility for managing the global technical revenue accounting policies and related financial statement disclosures; liaising with regional accounting and finance teams to ensure consistent application of US GAAP guidance as well as operational consistency. The Director will work closely with commercial business partners to review contract terms and review complex transactions/judgments with external auditors. In addition, this role will manage the Global consolidation reporting process and presenting revenue results to Accounting Senior Management.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining the companies global revenue recognition policies; including training and ensuring consistent application of policies across the regions
  • Responsible for global customer contract evaluation and documentation process including approval of technical conclusions
  • Collaborate with finance and commercial organizations in development of payer and reimbursement agreements terms to support revenue recognition conclusions
  • Build partnerships with accounting, finance and commercial organizations leading the application of accounting guidance in support of accurately stated product revenues and disclosures
  • Leads consolidated reporting and analytics of global revenue, gross to net estimates and judgments in support of quarterly close and earnings release
  • Leads the Company's quarterly and annual reviews supporting global revenue recognition and gross to net estimates
  • Drive continuous identification of improvement opportunities within the accounting close driving efficiency of process, standardization of documentation and scalability

Required Education Level
Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting

Required Experience
Typically requires 8-10 years of relevant experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or the equivalent combination of education and experience; prior experience in Big 4 accounting firm preferred.

Required Knowledge/Skills

  • Technical accounting experience and experience with evaluating and documenting customer contracts under ASC 606
  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry; prior experience accounting for complex gross to net estimates preferred
  • Proven ability to research and evaluate complex revenue accounting judgments successfully
  • Proven leadership expertise and organizational skills to manage global projects as well as business partners and other stakeholders
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills necessary for leading cross functional projects and presenting to senior management (including accounting, finance and commercial management)
  • Strong skills demonstrated in MS Office including experience preparing executive level power point decks
  • Proactively promotes process improvement mindset aimed at building scalable and efficient processes

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:
1. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
2. On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
