Position Summary:
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications and
nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Chemistry and
Environmental Science. We are seeking an outstanding and visionary leader who
will advance the department's reputation in research, teaching, and service.
The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement,
leadership experience, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative and
inclusive academic environment.
Essential Functions:
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for the department, advancing its academic and research missions.
- Foster a culture of excellence in teaching, research, and service.
- Support faculty development, recruitment, and retention.
- Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and secure external research funding.
- Ensure effective management of departmental resources, including budgetary oversight.
- Serve as a key advocate for the department within the university and with external stakeholders.
- Encourage a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field.
- A distinguished record of research, scholarship, and teaching sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured professor or associate professor.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic or research setting.
- Strong commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Proven ability to manage resources, including budgets, personnel, and research infrastructure.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- A collaborative leadership style and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

About the Department:
The Department of CES at NJIT, within the Jordan Hu College
of Science and Liberal Arts, is in a dynamic growth phase, with eight new hires
in the past five years and a recent renovation and expansion of facilities. Our
18 tenured and tenure-track faculty, together with twelve full-time professors
of practices, lecturers and staff, have diverse teaching and research interests
and a strong commitment to the success of our approximately 236 undergraduate, 49
M.S., and 48 Ph.D. students enrolled in the department's degree programs. The
Department offers BS, MS, and PhD Chemistry, BS Biochemistry, MS Pharmaceutical
Chemistry and Cell and Gene Therapy Sciences (PMS), and BS, MS, and PhD
Environmental Science degrees, and the only accredited BS degree in Forensic
