Overview:

We are hiring a Research Systems Engineer who will play a crucial role in managing and supporting Windows and Linux servers and large storage systems! Areas of focus include maintaining system health, analyzing system performance, and ensuring all activities are documented in accordance with customer requirements. This position resides in the Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Systems Administration & Engineering:

  • Manage, configure, and maintain both Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Design, implement, and support VMware virtualized environments.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring uptime and reliability.
  • Perform regular system updates, patches, and backups.

Storage Management:

  • Design, implement, and manage storage solutions, including SAN, NAS, and cloud storage.
  • Ensure data integrity and availability through effective storage strategies.

Customer Service & Support:

  • Provide advanced support and troubleshooting for internal and external customers.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify and resolve technical issues in a timely manner.
  • Act as a technical mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers.

Project Management & Documentation:

  • Lead or participate in IT infrastructure projects, from design to implementation.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all system configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.

Security & Compliance:

  • Implement and maintain security best practices for system and network infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and organizational policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in systems engineering and administration is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience managing both Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Strong expertise in VMware virtualization technology.
  • Advanced proficiency with storage technologies (e.g., SAN, NAS, cloud storage solutions).
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with federal computer systems and compliance standards is a plus.
  • Experience with automation tools and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Advanced networking skills.
