Position Summary
The Academic Program Manager ( APM) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the successful execution and continual enhancement of the Discover Abroad (DA) programs. These programs are dynamic, requiring students and staff to engage in immersive experiences abroad, which demands exceptional communication and group management skills. This position is predominantly field based, involving extended stays in multiple international locations, often up to three months at a time. The APM collaborates closely with the DA office, UGA faculty, and local field guides to oversee all aspects of program delivery. Key responsibilities include managing field logistics, liaising with local vendors, collaborating with faculty to facilitate curriculum delivery, training field guides, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

  • Operational Oversight: Partner with UGA faculty to manage daily operations of the program, including logistical coordination, curriculum implementation, and acting as the primary contact for vendors and local staff.

  • Curriculum Facilitation: Collaborate with UGA faculty to adapt and deliver curriculum content in the field, including organizing and conducting discussions and briefings related to the educational material.

  • Group Dynamics: Foster positive group dynamics, encourage teamwork, and mentor students on the principles of global citizenship and environmental stewardship.

  • Health and Safety: Maintain a culture of health, safety, and risk management. Promptly address and report any health or safety issues, ensuring all concerns are managed effectively.

  • Student Engagement: Build strong connections with students, respond to their social and emotional needs, and provide support for their academic, medical, and psychological well-being.

  • Communication and Coordination: Serve as a liaison between DA office, faculty, and students, ensuring smooth communication and coordination. Manage budgetary responsibilities including procurement and expense tracking.

  • Logistical Management: Ensure all necessary materials and technology are available and operational in the field, facilitate meal planning and preparation, manage food supplies for students, create and execute plans to assist in smooth program operations.

  • Emergency Response: Be available 24/7 to assist with emergencies, including academic, medical, and psychological issues, providing crucial support to faculty, field guides, and students.

  • Field Guide Training: Collaborate with the DA office to onboard and train new field guides, ensuring they understand program protocols and expectations.

  • Professional Development: Serve as a mentor and resource for field guides, providing feedback and fostering professional development.

  • Communication Facilitation: Act as a conduit between field guides and faculty, facilitating clear and effective communication.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Promote and model a culturally sensitive environment, ensuring respect for diversity and fostering an inclusive atmosphere that supports positive group dynamics.

  • Administrative Support: Assist the DA office with various administrative tasks including program application reviews, student interviews, and advising new faculty.

  • Orientation and Events: Plan and manage orientation sessions, social events, and study away fairs, ensuring they are effectively organized and executed.

  • Program Preparation: Support final program preparations, including document preparation and itinerary planning, and participate in debriefing meetings to review program outcomes.

  • Application and Equipment Management: Assist with program application interviews, equipment audits, and other administrative functions as needed.
