The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. Job Summary:

The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. We are looking for a cheminformatics/computational chemistry intern to join our global Data and Computational Sciences (DCS) department at Vertex. This position is part of the Chemical Data Science team dedicated to building out our cheminformatics capabilities across disease programs. As a key member of the team, the candidate will conduct structure-activity relationships (SAR) analyses, interpret outcomes, and communicate results to stakeholders. The candidate will collaborate cross-functionally across Vertex and have ample opportunities to interact with other members of DCS.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review primary literature and develop an analysis plan for the chemistry datasets of interest
  • Analyze, visualize, and interpret SAR data from Vertex-internal high-throughput experimental datasets
  • Distill analyses and scientific results into key take-home messages and recommendations for next steps
  • Regularly present findings and progress in formal and informal settings to colleagues
  • Collaborate with colleagues within DCS and in other departments, such as medicinal chemistry and high-throughput experimental chemistry

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. students in cheminformatics, computational chemistry, or a related STEM field (reaction informatics, chemistry, computer science)
  • Experience with programming (Python is preferred but another language is acceptable)
  • A proven track record in analysis and interpretation of chemistry data
  • Solid understanding of chemistry and statistics
  • Familiarity with data wrangling and data parsing
  • Expertise in machine learning is preferred
  • Experience using scientific toolkits (RDKit, OpenEye, scikit-learn) is preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before May 2025
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May - August 2025
