Full Range: $102,000 - $160,500 annually

About the Position

The Deputy Director assists the department Director with the overall planning and management to achieve the mission of providing, through responsible stewardship, the highest quality parks, trails, programs, services, and experiences to energize visitors so they can become life-long users and advocates. This position will lead the overall operations, maintenance, development, field management, natural resources, interpretation, trails, and planning.

We Require

  • Eight years of professional experience in a Park or Natural Resource-related organization, including six years of directly related supervisory and/or management experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Parks & Recreation Management, Natural Resources Management, Eco-tourism Management, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/orjob-related experience may substitute for therequired education on a year-for-year basis

Our preferred candidate will have knowledge and experience in Open Space and Natural Resource Management.

Job Contributions

  • Plan, manage, organize, and direct staff, consultants, vendors, park and natural resource professionals, volunteers, and others involved in the day-to-day operation, safety, maintenance, renovation, and construction of all Maricopa County Regional parks, trails, recreation facilities, services, and programs including the Volunteer, Education, and Natural Resource Programs

  • Manage all Department operational and development functions; analyze Department results and provide recommendations on improving outcomes and service delivery; identify operational problems and develop solutions

  • Establish operational and developmental strategic goals and objectives for more than ninety operational staff, including recreation, education, and development of park facilities

  • Develop staffing plans and analyze workloads to ensure effective and efficient performance for customer experience.Create process improvements and strategies to increase and improve results

  • Lead and collaborate in the development and implementation of park and system master, natural resource, trail, and capital improvement plans

  • Create and maintain standards, strategies, and programs for enhanced visitor experience, customer service, and revenue generation

  • Coordinate regional park operations and development with various federal, state, local, and private agencies for twelve unique parks. Provide policy and regulation interpretations for park operations and development, including natural resource management

  • Participate in leading the organizational direction and refining park rules, policies, and procedure, including, acting as the Department lead in public safety and liaison with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

  • Participate in the Department's budgeting process for all operations and capital development

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a standard office environment. However, work may also occur in the field, where exposure to environmental factors such as high temperatures, dry conditions, fumes, dust, and unexpected weather conditions should be expected. This position may require regular vehicle travel between offsite locations, including other Maricopa County Parks or within the same park of distances greater than one mile; thus, the selected candidate must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.
