Job Summary

The Finance Support Manager role involves developing, interpreting, and implementing financial concepts for financial planning, resource allocation, and budget control of division finances and research projects. Responsibilities include analyzing and preparing recommendations for financial plans, such as annual resource allocations, forecasting future requirements, and operating forecasts.

Using advanced professional concepts and aligning with organizational objectives, you will resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. The work requires analyzing situations or data that demand an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Will exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to achieve results. Contacts will span all levels, both internal and external to the department and division

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $109,300 - $163,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM), the largest department in the School of Medicine, has close to 600 full-time faculty leading top-notch research, clinical, and education programs. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, ZSFG, VAMC and Mt. Zion) and 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rests with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites, and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and VAMC sites.

The Division of Gastroenterology is a large subspecialty division in the Department of Medicine. GI Divisional activities include teaching, research, and patient care at the UCSF Parnassus Campus, (and the affiliated hospitals UCSF, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, SFGH, VAMC). The GI Division has a total of ~118 personnel, including 27 full time faculty, 10 faculty emeritus, recall, and VCF, 27 fellows, 8 administrative support staff, and 46 research personnel, two ACGME accredited fellowship programs, in Gastroenterology and Advanced Liver Transplantation, and two non-acgme fellowship programs in IBD, and Advanced Endoscopy, annual fiscal expenditures of ~$20M, not including the new $25M Microbiome Center award received 07/01/19 and described below.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of four years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience / training; advanced knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems; ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources; advanced ability to effectively present complex finance and clinical related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner; in depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports; advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail; in depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment; ability to adapt to changing priorities; ability to function as a member of a team. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training; advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources

  • Advanced degree in related area and five or more years equivalent experience / training and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • Previous working experience in an academic environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources.
  • Advanced ability to effectively present complex finance related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • In depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. In depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, cooperative agreements.
