The Assistant Director for Community-Engaged Scholarship (ADCES) provides leadership for the Morgridge Center's community-engaged scholarship efforts, a robust and well-respected portfolio of programs that engages various campus and community audiences to advance innovative approaches to community-university engagement. Among other core duties, the ADCES supervises the CES Specialist (CESS), Community-Engaged Scholarship Graduate Intern and CES TA to support the development and implementation of Community-based Learning (CBL) courses, research, and programs in collaboration with community partners, faculty, academic staff and students.


Responsibilities:
Provides guidance for program planning, implementation, and evaluation, and/or supervises outreach staff. Monitors budget and appropriate funding for programming. Promotes stable and productive relationships between the university and community. Strives to expand and ensure access to programs, facilities, and educational services to diverse audiences.

  • 30% Supervises the implementation of outreach-program-focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives
  • 30% Develops and implements operating policies and procedures to promote the outreach program in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 5% Monitors the unit or program budget and approves program expenditures
  • 15% Reviews recommendations for and provides input on the design and development of new outreach programs or services
  • 10% Determines outreach program needs and the personnel resource allocation plan
  • 10% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees


Tasks:

  • Develop and implement faculty-focused programs, events, and efforts to foster and institutionalize community-engaged teaching, research and scholarship on campus
  • Supervise and lead the Community Engagement Scholarship (CES) team in collaboratively supporting program development, and course support
  • Provide leadership in building, strengthening and sustaining campus and community partnerships around community-based learning pedagogies and community-based research initiatives
  • Consult with individual faculty and instructional staff, departments and other academic units in designing or modifying existing courses to use a CBL approach appropriate to their respective disciplines
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic staff and community partners to support interdisciplinary community and university research partnerships by facilitating connections between individuals, units, and community partners
  • Develop, revise, and administer, curriculum for student preparation and work with the Community Engagement Preparation (CEP) graduate intern to disseminate content via different modalities
  • With Faculty Director and CES Team, promote and raise awareness of CBL, CBR and engaged scholarship among students, faculty and the community
  • Conduct outreach to local nonprofit organizations to identify matches between their opportunities and CBL classes and CBR initiatives
  • Create and facilitate professional development opportunities including the Morgridge Fellows cohort, Morgridge Affiliates, CES community of practice, and engaged scholar's roundtable programs
  • Responsible for managing the Wisconsin Idea Fellowship (WIF) program and supporting the WIF cohort, and leading planning and execution of the annual Wisconsin Idea Conference
  • Teach Counseling Psychology 601, Best practices in community-engaged scholarship, each fall with support from the CES TA
  • Develop and manage the CES program budget
  • Co-administer the Master's Certificate and Doctoral Minor in CES with CSCS (Civic Society and Civil Studies), chair and manage CBL course development and CBR grants processes and provide support to recipients
  • Collaborate with Provost's Office and Registrar's Office in policy development concerning CBL course designation in the schedule of classes, students' transcripts, and review new course proposals
  • Participate in the Center's strategic planning process, - contribute to the Annual Report, other Center initiatives, all reporting needs of the Center and - perform other duties as requested

Education:

Required
Master's Degree in education or a related field

Preferred
PhD or knowledge of dissertating process and graduate education


Qualifications:

Preferred:
- Extensive knowledge of Community-based Learning (CBL) pedagogies and Community-based Research (CBR) practices, including emerging practices in campus-community engagement
- Experience or knowledge of faculty perspectives on CES and landscape of faculty reward systems at UW-Madison, including tenure, promotion and other ways to incentivize and recognize faculty CES
- Demonstrated capacity for program development, administration and evaluation
- Documented ability to work successfully with a broad range of constituencies (students, faculty, staff, and non-profit colleagues) and experience developing long-term partnerships
- Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Highly organized; ability to multi-task
- Demonstrated experience working both independently and collaboratively
- Evidence of research and publishing credentials in the field of CBL/CBR
- Presenting experience in the field of CBL/CBR
- Understanding of history and power dynamics of community engagement and ability to span those boundaries
- Demonstrated understanding of the nonprofit landscape in Madison and familiarity with state and local context

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. It is anticipated that one day/week will be remote, with additional workplace flexibility as needed.

Actual pay is determined at hire and is based on experience and qualifications.
