Job Description

Pay: $17/hour

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:30am-4pm

JOB SUMMARY:

The Instructor, Day Program develops and implements curriculum for the Possibilities Day Program in our classroom to effectively teach participants with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to facilitate their independent functioning in a work and community environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Curriculum Development, Design, and Instruction:



  • The Day Program Instructor will utilize a curriculum that teaches Activities of Daily Living and Vocational skills in order to teach our participants how to move towards greater independence. Under the supervision of the Possibilities Activity Lead and working together with the team of other instructors, the classroom teacher will help develop a new curriculum that meets the objective of teaching participants daily living skills as well as implementing an established curriculum. The Day Program Instructor will monitor individual learning and facilitate training as needed. The instructor will conduct Focus Groups with the participants in their classes in order to get their input on curricular ideas for their program.


Program Documentation, Tracking, and Reporting:



  • The Day Program Instructor will be responsible for documenting the curriculum, creating lesson plans, monthly calendars for their class, expense report requests, and filling in other paperwork, as required.


Relationship Management:



  • The Day Program Instructor will keep the Activity Lead informed of progress, considerations, and pertinent information regarding the learning areas. In addition, the Day Program Instructor will participate in team meetings and in-service training sessions. The incumbent will deal effectively and calmly with non-routine situations following accepted guidelines, communicate significant problems to the Activity Lead, and perform other duties as required.


Client Care:



  • The Day Program Instructor will assist in the implementation of program plans, giving reinforcers, and providing one-on-one assistance and/or training for our participants. The incumbent will assist as needed in the preparation necessary for arrival and end-of-day client departure and provide supervision at the beginning and end of the day to ensure the safety of program participants when exiting the bus and entering the facility. The Day Program Instructor will communicate pertinent information to rehabilitation staff and assist program participants with transitioning throughout the day. The incumbent will be an active member of the Day Program team and will assist team members with all client care.


Research and Industry Involvement:



  • The Day Program Instructor will be trained on the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Rules, Regulations and Standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and a good working knowledge of Goodwill's policies and procedures.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in education or in a human service-related field is preferred.


Experience:



  • Preferred experience in providing services to persons with physical, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities.


Other:



  • It is preferred, but not required, that the instructor have one (1) year of teaching experience.
  • The Instructor should demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, writing and speaking clearly and concisely; demonstrate the ability to interact with various types of internal and external customers.
  • It is also preferred that the incumbent have the ability to relate effectively to individuals with disabilities, their parents, Home Host providers, and guardians and be empathetic toward their needs.
  • Our instructor must have the ability to work independently, cooperatively and to exercise effective planning, demonstrating excellent organization skills.
  • The Day Program Instructor should possess excellent time management skills and have a working knowledge of community resources, train, and be creative in motivating each participant toward individual success.
  • The incumbent must also conduct themself in a professional manner and maintain a professional appearance that enhances the firm's reputation.
  • The Day Program Instructor must have experience speaking effectively to various small groups in a presenting/informative role.
