Position Description

Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with PhD studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is one of six departments within the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University. The department is housed in a modern research and teaching facility and has excellent teaching and research support and animal facilities both on and off-campus. The department has a strong undergraduate program in Animal and Food Sciences with over 900 undergraduates and is the home of many competitive teams and student organizations. The Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is a leading college at Texas Tech University with six academic departments: Agriculture and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Plant and Soil Science, and Natural Resources Management; as well as multiple research centers and institutes. For the most recent academic year, the college has over 100 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 2000 undergraduates, and 400 graduate students. Texas Tech University is one of four major state-supported, multidisciplinary universities in Texas and has attained national research university status. The University consists of ten colleges, a School of Law, the Graduate School, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Currently, more than 40,000 students attend classes at the Lubbock campus. Major/Essential Functions

Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and facilitating the TTU National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility Laboratory Training Program. The position also bears responsibility for planning and participating in a research project associated with the NBAF program. In addition to the NBAF program, the individual in this position will be expected to continuously contribute to on-going research efforts within the TTU Meat Science Program and with collaborators at USDA-ARS Livestock Issues Research Unit, formulate manuscripts for publication, and contribute to research funding proposals. This individual may also supervise research and student assistants.

  • Ability to work in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical software (SAS, XLSTAT).
  • Conceptualize and conduct research projects.
  • Formulate research grants.
  • Disseminate project results at scientific conferences.
  • Have flexible schedule to accommodate research protocols.
  • Purchase laboratory supplies.
  • Be approved to drive TTU vehicles.

Required Qualifications

PhD in area of project specialization. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

Preferred Qualifications


  • PhD degree in Animal Science or related field.
  • Proven track record of procuring research funding.
  • Proven track record of formulating and publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation (GC-FID, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS)
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics of mass spectrometry data.
  • Knowledge and research experience in meat science
  • Experience in working with interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with presenting scientific findings at national and international conferences.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Experience collecting biological samples from animals.

Review student reports and provide written feedback.
