Registered Nurse - Emergency Room

Grundy County Memorial Hospital

Full Time - 7:00PM-7:00AM

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the direct and indirect provision of professional nursing care for the patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The RN is accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of care delivered to patients, including coordination and direct supervision of the patient care team. The ED RN is the acting house supervisor in the absence of department or senior leadership.

Responsibilities

Patient Care/Department Responsibilities

  • Administer professional nursing services within the RN scope of practice and in accordance with GCMH policies and procedures.
  • Provide nursing support to the Med Surg department as needed.
  • Ensure that safety and sanitation standards are maintained in all work areas.
  • Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician/provider in accordance with GCMH policies and procedures.
  • Obtain ordered medication, supplies, and equipment.
  • Participate in orientation of new staff.
  • Ensure that supporting personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable standards, in accordance with the plan of care and patient wishes. Report any concerns to the ED Team Leader or Director of Clinical Services.
  • Ensure that hospital personnel, patients and visitors follow the hospital/department's established policies and procedures at all times.
  • Complete all necessary documentation as required and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Display a working knowledge of equipment and trouble-shooting as needed.
  • Adhere to daily and monthly control checks (ie. Glucometer, crash cart, alarms, refrigerator temperature logs, outdates, etc.). Report and maintain records.
  • Complete unit specific daily tasks as assigned (ie. Charge entry, call backs, culture log, radiology log, outdates).
  • Obtain and document in the electronic health record all nurse-collect labs such as, but not limited to UA, stool samples, sputum specimens, RSV, Mono, strep, COVID-19.
  • Participate in the department quality improvement projects.
  • Provide proper shift report. Communicate patient care issues to the following shift. Ensure that team members are aware of any changes throughout the shift.
  • Restock treatment rooms and nurse area daily.
  • Interpret patient data and implement action plan appropriate to situation using critical thinking.
  • Collaborate with appropriate disciplines to develop coordinated outcomes and interventions, interact with team members regarding patient progress.
  • Follow established universal precautions in the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist with transfers, patient death and organ donation.
  • Respond to Rapid Response and Code events throughout the hospital.
  • Provide patient and family education and discharge instructions.

House Supervisor

  • Implement Incident Command System in the event of an emergency, in the absence of senior leadership.
  • Round in patient care departments at least twice per shift.
  • Notify Senior Leadership of media requests.
  • Serve as a resource to nurses who require assistance with clinical skills and patient care.
  • In the absence of Med Surg clinical care coordinator or Med Surg team leader, determine bed availability for admission requests in collaboration with Med Surg nurses and Hospitalist.
  • Serve as a central point of contact and resource for GCMH team members during off-shifts.
  • Contact the Administrator on Call as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • RN current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa.
  • Must possess and maintain current BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and Dependent Adult and Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter certification as outlined per policy.
  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
  • Proficient with email, Microsoft office computer skills.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience as an RN working in emergency department or intensive care.
  • Current professional certification related to area of practice.
