Major Responsibilities:
  • Serves as chief retention officer for unit/dept.
    • 3)Fosters peer preceptor and mentoring relationships within staff.
    • 4)Mentors staff in career and professional development.
    • 2)Supports "new hires" through a structured orientation program. Coaches and provides feedback to orientees.
    • 5)Articulates and understands clinical nursing practice issues and provides staff with necessary resources to deliver nursing care.
    • 6)Involves RNs and other unit staff in unit governance and mentors leadership skills.
    • 7)Encourages and role models reward and recognition programs.
    • 8)Recognizes staff who perform exemplary customer service.
    • 9)Implements flexible scheduling and staffing models.
    • 10)Monitors and documents performance of staff and takes appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary. *11. Monitors unit retention, conducts exit interviews and acts on them.
    • 1)Utilizes internal resources to plan, develop, implement and evaluate orientation programs, inservice education, and professional growth and development programs for staff.
  • Maintains effective working relations with both internal and external customers
    • 5)Assures that education relevant to patient/family needs are implemented.
    • 1)Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to assure delivery of quality care.
    • 2)Actively participates in hospital committees and continuous quality improvement projects.
    • 3)Collaborates with peers in the integration of clinical standards to meet patient and unit needs.
    • 4)Coordinates with internal/external customers to facilitate patient satisfaction as well as cost effectiveness.
  • Manages, develops, implements and evaluates standards of nursing to facilitate quality patient care, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
    • 8)Provides strategic planning and direction for the implementation of unit goals and implements change to enhance effectiveness of patient care.
    • 9)Continually monitors compliance with all regulatory agency standards, policies/procedures at the unit level.
    • 10)Fosters an environment of clinical excellence.
    • 1)Collaborates with the medical director and nursing staff to jointly plan patient care, develop education opportunities for staff and resolve interdisciplinary conflicts.
    • 2)Establishes staffing requirements and plans for appropriate utilization of human resources.
    • 3)Assesses acuity, caseload and complexity of patients to determine staffing levels.
    • 4)Assumes 24-hour accountability for assigned area of operation.
    • 5)Annually reviews and approves all departmental standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols.
    • 6)Establishes in conjunction with the medical director and care coordinator criteria for monitoring of quality indicators in accordance with Lutheran General Hospital quality management program.
    • 7)Develops and implements quality improvement processes in response to nurse sensitive, hospital and system quality indicators, to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Prepares of departmental budgets (supplies, equipment, personnel). Responsible for budget management and performance and fiscal oversight of all areas of responsibility.
    • 1)Prepares an annual budget and monitors budgetary expenditures. Reports, and implements a plan to address variances on an ongoing basis.
    • 2)Develops major equipment purchase proposals.
    • 3)Develops new and expanding program proposals with cost/budget implications.
    • 4)Determines priority levels of capital and completes feasibility studies as needed in collaboration with the Director of Nursing and Finance.
    • 5)Ensures that all departmental expenses are processed appropriately, timely, and according to Advocate's financial control policy and corporate compliance guidelines.
    • 6)Identifies inventory levels and costs of supplies maintained in the area.
    • 7)Monitors utilization of staff, supplies, and equipment for optimal efficiency, and makes recommendations as appropriate.
    • 8)Ensures charges are entered appropriately on a daily basis.
    • 9)Appropriately manages budgeted vs. actual FTEs, open requisitions, profile processing, performance reviews, and salary adjustments within policy guidelines.
    • 10)Analyzes acuity, staffing and outcome variances. *11. (Revenue departments only) Maintains an up-to-date chargemaster for the area; maintains up-to-date RVUs/cost standards in TSI.
  • Responsible for personal and professional growth and development
    • 1)Maintains unit and management competencies.
    • 2)Keeps abreast of current standards of care via literature, educational offerings, etc.
    • 3)Participates in activities to enhance professional growth by involvement in professional organizations and continuing education.
    • 4)Maintains awareness of new trends, technology, and methodology in health care and evaluates appropriateness for implementation.


Licensure:
  • Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:
  • *Eff.6/1/2012: BSN preferred,ADN with agreement to enroll in BSN completion program in two years to be completed in five years. Bachelors degree required (BA, BS, BSN, etc.) 5 years of relevant clinical experience Demonstrated leadership experience Eff 06/28/2015 Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) OR Bachelors Degree any field with a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) * Advocate Children's Hospital: Earn 20 continuing education hours within a 2 year period of which 16 hours must be pediatric continuing education hours


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Good customer orientation Basic skills in organization Planning and delegation skills Basic team building skills Utilization of critical thinking in timely decision making Basic PC skills Effective communication skills in a group setting
  • Current licensure in Illinois RN PALS Certification (PALS shall include both cognitive and practical skills evaluation)


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work within a rapid changing environment Ability to move patients, lifting 30 lbs or more may be required Ability to work collaboratively with internal/external customers Ability to prioritize and respond to multiple simultaneous request May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases 24-hour accountability for patient care issues This position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated
