Job Purpose

For development scope ranging from carryover parts verification to supplier designed parts management and/or new design creation, independently define engine part specifications which achieve an optimal balance by issuing 3D data, 2D drawings, and/or Bill of Materials (BOM).

Key Accountabilities

  • Create part development plans based on vehicle development schedule, part verification requirements and lead times
  • Design conceptualization: Given vehicle targets, determine what aspects of assigned parts must be changed and/or verified. Clarify the important design inputs and appropriate target for each. Design inputs include but are not limited to cost, weight, manufacturability, assemble-ability, service-ability, package-ability including surrounding parts clearance, appearance, performance & durability.
  • Design execution: Based on knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, & maintenance processes as well as thorough understanding & consideration of variation factors (part tolerance, part dynamic movement behavoir, part deformation tendencies) for both assigned part and surrounding parts, establish rough 3D layout concept and mature into fully defined 3D model. Revise and repeat as needed when failures arise.
  • Drawing creation and issuance; Based on the factors described within the design concept, define the specification in the drawing in order to ensure the parts will be manufactured and assembled in such a way that fully satisfies all design inputs. Clearly communicate these changes in the drawing issue spec notice that will be released to the factory and retained for future reference.
  • BOM setting: Determine which features of the vehicle are critical for the application of assigned parts. This must be done thoroughly such that if any impacted feature is changed, the application is flagged for correction.
  • Change Point Verification: Considering changes in surrounding parts, identify change impacts and associated confirmation items, establish target achievement prospect and document/report in evaluation events
  • Cost calculation, correlation & reporting: Based on understanding of part specification and manufacturing process, estimate the cost for new designs. Then use this estimation to assess the validity of the supplier quotation and support Honda purchasing to negotiate for the most reasonable cost.
  • Internal & external collaboration: Thoroughly communicate with related parties as needed to carry out all responsibilities listed above. Related parties include: group leader, technical expert, chief engineer, manager, factory, service, supplier, purchasing, other test and design engineers, Japan R&D counterparts, etc.
  • Document creation, reporting & follow-up: Create documentation for all assigned parts as required by company evaluation processes, report in evaluation events, and respond to any follow up items per the requested deadline

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • BSME or BSEE
  • 3 years previous product development experience (preferably automotive-related)
  • 3D parametric modelling, Drawing creation & dimensioning, Design for manufacturing/assembly, Resolving cross-functional issues, cost estimation and design optimization for cost, Excellent verbal and written communication, short/mid/long term scheduling

Workstyle

  • Physical: Primarily works at desk or meeting table; frequen use of keyboard/mouse/monitor. Test prep support or inspections may require occasional standing, kneeling, squatting, reaching, bending, or lifting/transporting parts
  • Overtime: Expected based on project demands
  • Travel: Average of 1-5 times annually, includes possible overseas travel
  • Hazards: Risks found in a typical office setting. May be exposed to hot surfaces, parts with sharp edges, dropped objects, contact with objects overhead, loud noises, moving parts, cutting equipment, rust/dirt or other debris.
  • Maintains professional conduct and follows all departmental, safety department and company policies, procedures and rules.
