Certified Ophthalmic Technician

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Current Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician.

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

EXPERIENCE:

1. One year of experience in Ophthalmology.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Obtain and record accurate patient histories including chief complaint, present ocular status, ocular history, family history, past and present medical history, medications and allergies, and vital signs as needed

2. Obtain and record visual acuity measurements on a variety of patient populations.

3. Measure and record spectacle prescriptions, measure base curves, optical centers, prism of spectacles using both manual and automated devices.

4. Perform tonometry in measurement of intraocular pressures using a variety of measuring devices.

5. Perform and record refractometry on a variety of patients using retinoscopy, manifest techniques and over refraction.

6. Insert, remove and assess contact lenses. General fitting techniques using hard, semi-rigid, soft contact lenses and toric fittings. Include all therapeutic and bandage type contact lenses (with and without pharmacological agents) as directed by a physician and provides patient education

7. Perform and record the Schirmers tear test and tear break up time.

8. Perform extraocular muscle testing including Titmus stereo test, Krimsky and Hirschberg measurements, Worth 4-dot testing, cover-cross cover, cover-uncover testing to elicit muscle imbalances, accurately measure and record muscle imbalances in primary, secondary and tertiary positions of gaze and identification of syndromes and dysfunction associated with extraocular muscles.

9. Perform and record color vision screening and diagnostic testing (Ishihara color plates, D-15 and Farnsworth-Munsell 100hue).

10. Perform and describe pupillary functions as to light and accommodation, describe specific abnormalities including afferent defects, anisocoria hippus, Adie's surgical abnormalities, etc.

11. Conduct and record formal and informal visual fields including confrontation Amsler Grid, Tangent Screen, Humphrey Automated perimetry and Goldmann manual perimetry on a variety of patients (glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmological, oculoplastics, pediatric, retinal patients, etc.).

12. Assess and record findings related to oculoplastics patients including measurement of vertical lid fissures, ptosis measurements, description and measurement of proptosis, enophthalmos, etc. as directed by the physician.

13. Evaluate, perform diagnostic testing and record information for neuro-ophthalmology patients including saccadic eye movements, one-meter, two-meter tangent screen testing, corneal sensitivity, pupil abnormalities etc. as directed by the physician.

14. Perform and record corneal assessment using a variety of devices (keratometer, corneal topographical mapping, pachymetry (manual and automated), slit lamp biomicroscopy) and corneal diameter measurements.

15. Perform diagnostic ultrasonography using A-Mode.

16. Apply eye patches and ocular dressings as directed by the physician (occlusive therapy, pressure patching, etc.).

17. Assist in minor ocular surgical procedures and laser treatments as directed including informed consent, and surgical site identification

18. Under the direct supervision of physician, instill ocular preparations as required including solutions, suspensions, ointments, and therapeutic agents.

19. Assist in laser procedures for both the retina service and anterior segment/refractive service to include Yag, Argon, Argon-Krypton, Excimer and Diode lasers.

20. Perform and record electrophysiologic tests( ERG, VEP, EOG)

21. Assist in the formal education and training of technical students and new employees as assigned.

22. Assist in peer interviews

23. May scribe for provider when needed including order placement and protocol orders. Maintains confidentiality

24. Triage patient calls, collaborate with provider, and provide patient care instructions as defined by the provider.

1. Work requires strength and /or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing for long intervals ,frequent walking, and carrying materials or pushing equipment weighing 40 + lbs.

1. Normal outpatient clinical environment. Incumbent may be exposed to biohazards and communicable disease.

2. The incumbent will work in the presence ofophthalmic lasers frequently and be required to wear protective eye equipment

3. May work with blood, lab specimens, and other patient bodily fluids that require universal precautions

4. Travel to offsite clinics may be required

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1.The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high volume clinic

2. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and computers.

3. Analytical skills are desirable to complete the technical aspects of patient examinations.
