Supervisor Nursing, Emergency Department

Responsible for supervising nursing, support staff and patient care activities on assigned shifts. Acts as a clinical resource to unit staff members. May also assume responsibility for direct patient care as needed. Promotes the conceptual framework of Aurora Health Care's nursing practice. This is accomplished by subscribing to the five management accountabilities: human resources, fiscal, materials management, support and system linkage.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides work direction to the staff with clear responsibility for the coordination of resources to efficiently support procedures, day-to-day operations and the smooth flow of patients through the department.
  • Promotes an environment conducive to the delivery of quality patient care. Advocates for rights of patients and staff.
  • Promotes communication among patients, families, hospital departments, and medical staff to optimize the interdependence of all team members. Coordinates the needs of physicians and acts as liaison between the medical staff and the nursing staff by serving as a problem solver and mediator.
  • Develops and maintains effective intra- and inter-departmental relationships. Facilitates positive communication with medical supply companies and their representatives.
  • Evaluates the quality of patient care provided in the specialty area through collaboration with unit and organization resource people. Ensures policies and procedures are in compliance with those of the medical center, the nursing department, and regulatory agencies.
  • In collaboration with the manager, conducts ongoing process improvement.
  • Serves as a clinical resource contact for patients, families, nursing staff, other health care members and external agencies.
  • In collaboration with departmental and organizational staff, develops department orientation and continuing education programs for all staff. Teaches and guides staff. Assists with various teaching programs.
  • Provides input regarding equipment/supply needs, renovations, and environmental issues in preparation of operating and capital equipment budgets.
  • Supports Shared Leadership and its functions related to Nursing Evaluation, Peer Review, Policy/Procedures, and Standards of Nursing Practice.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in an inpatient nursing unit environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills necessary.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously.
