JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Office of Veterans Affairs and Services supports military-connected students by enabling their access to all aspects of higher education and empowering them to succeed while at Penn State and as they transition to post-education endeavors. Toward that end, we are adding a Student Veteran Career Counselor to our team to provide U.S. military student servicemembers and student veterans with career service programs, support, coaching, counseling, and opportunities that are tailored to the Penn State military-connected student community.

The successful candidate will be responsible for engaging both internal stakeholders and external entities such as businesses, corporations, and Penn State alumni to build partnerships to support the Student Veteran Center's career services mission.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Manage daily activities of the Student Veteran Career Services Program and coordinate program activities with all campuses, other university units, and external entities.

  • Create, manage, and deliver career service programs and services. This involves establishing and assigning program priorities, ensuring program and program event schedules/calendars are maintained and deadlines are met, and developing processes/procedures for the program.

  • Provide individual and group career coaching and/or counseling to guide military-connected students on the exploration of career identity, career possibilities, and career opportunities.

  • Assist military-connected students in translating their military experiences, skills, and accomplishments into valued qualifications that will resonate with employers.

  • Guide military-connected students in the career search and hiring process to include job searching guidance, application support, resume reviews, mock interviews, and salary negotiations; develop and implement communication strategies to promote opportunities to students.

  • Plan, coordinate, publicize, execute, and deliver military-connected student tailored career workshops.

  • Engage military/veteran-friendly business, corporations, and alumni to solicit mentoring, engagement, internship, mini-internship, real-world project, career, and philanthropic opportunities and support for Penn State's military-connected student community.

This is a term role funded for one year from the start date with an excellent possibility of re-funding.

Education and experience:

  • Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Preference will be given to individuals who have experience working with or knowledge of military culture, families, and/or background(s).

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $74,000.00

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
