Job Overview

The Instrument/Sterile Processing Technician Shift Supervisor provides support and leadership related to the cleaning of equipment and sterilization of instruments. The Supervisor is responsible and accountable for coordinating and planning workflow and other activities. In addition, the supervisor, decontaminates, prepares and maintains surgical instruments and equipment; prepares performance evaluations and disciplinary actions; provides cleaning, reprocessing and sterilization services to Surgical Services and all patient care areas.

Shift: Weekday evenings 3PM-11:30pm. Weekend call required and some holidays may be required as well

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION - High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • EXPERIENCE - Three years of sterile processing, surgical instrument or instrument technician experience.
  • EQUIVALENCY - Two years of surgical technologist experience may substitute for the three years of sterile processing, surgical instrument or instrument technician experience.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) - CBSPD Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CSPM) or IAHCSMM Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Directs the day to day activities and assists in the supervision of department staff and serves as a liaison with department leadership.
  • Performs all case cart functions including picking all surgical service preference cards for Operating Room (OR) and Procedure Center cases.
  • Performs all essential functions and equipment processing functions including issuing out all par levels that have been set for the floors.
  • Performs decontamination functions for all durable medical equipment, and OR surgical instruments.
  • Performs Sterile Processing functions with a variety of types of sterilization methods.
  • Precepts new employees.
  • Participates in departmental, divisional, and/or organizational committees and projects as assigned.
  • Participates in professional education and growth opportunities within Sterile Processing and instrument technology. Maintains certifications and stays up to date with current trends in field.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated objectives for the section, unit, function, or project. Is normally the first level of full supervision. Performs most elements of supervision over 50% of the time. May also perform the work of front line staff as needed.

Complexity: Work assignment is generally unstructured and employee is responsible for assigning and supervising a variety of functions to achieve the objectives of the section, unit, or project. Duties performed involve weighing and evaluating factors requiring judgment, analytical ability, and problem solving.

Decision Making: Employee is responsible for simultaneous coordination and supervision of several functions, programs, or projects in various stages of completion. Primary responsibility for arranging and directing the work of two or more employees.

Communications: Contacts are of a non-prescribed nature involving the negotiation and resolution of problems and where exceptional degrees of discretion, judgment, and specialized knowledge are required in carrying out the programs and policies of an organization.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $56,680.33 to $85,020.50
Hourly Salary Range: $27.25 to $40.88
